I see those dastardly ruskies in top gun(or whatever enemy they were) regunned their F-5s (probably supplied with MAP funding!)with M61 gatling 20mm ,not the usual M39 revolver. I don't think an M61 would fit!

Got to say I don't know I'd be too keen on flying a machine hard when it has multiple hinges in the spar like that prop plane..... must be serious bolts slide into place to give the spars strength when wings. The Buccaneer is one of those ugly but seriously cool jets.... I'd prob pick one of those over the F4, but not an F14

The Buccaneer was a pretty cool ship alright in Royal Navy and RAF Service. Here's a pretty impressive takeoff RAF-style:
There's plenty of cool Buccaneer footage on You Tube if you search for the term/word.

This is the one true Buccaneer video for me, especially at 1:07 and 2:20 :

The F-14 was strictly a 'pilot only' flight control system. Unlike Top Gun where Maverick is seen both flying and cursing whilst he also targets the weapon (leaving poor Goose to sound like a whingy passenger consistently yelling that they have bogeys on their tail etc...), the RIO would be in charge of the targeting and firing of the weapon. The Tomcat was considered a bit of a loathsome close in dogfighter, so chances are that rather than Maverick getting 'too close for missiles and switching to guns', Goose would have probably dispatched a missile (probably several as there were never any successful phoenix kills in US service)beyond visual range and taken out the bogey long before he saw it. The pilot is I suppose more of an aircraft operator (bus driver) while the guy in the back is overloaded with radar data trying to dicipher which threats should be taken out etc...
Protect the carrier is the main priority.
The radar system on the F-14 is powerful enough that the Iranian use it as an AWACs platform, pretty handy in that it can defend itself at the same time.
Still, Top Gun remains a guilty pleasure... even if Maverick does make it 160 miles out to the final dogfight in a little under two minutes!

Awesome video! Also love the F4 pilots trying to do their first carrier landing on the vid above too... If i remember right, that "Sailor" series was pretty good...was that the one which had Rod Stewart singing "We Are Sailing"

Thread drift, but I remember seeing years ago a movie with the USS Nimitz(?) going back in time (no idea why) and F-14s were in a position to destroy the Japanese aircraft on their way to bomb Pearl Harbour?

The Final Countdown en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Final_Countdown_%28film%29The other F-14 movie, completely barking plot, but great cinematography of F-14's wearing possibly the coolest unit markings of all time:

Top Gun is cool movie for the air to air action, and I really like Final countdown, some classic USN aircraft in that movie.
The VF 41 Jolly Rogers F 14' s are really cool in those Hi-vis markings.
Often wonder how much of a mess the Enterprise's Air Wing would have made of the Japanese fleet.
The Aircraft carriers being the prime targets, one could imagine the bomb toting A6's flying a low/ High/ low track and the 1000 0r 2000kg bombs crashing through the carriers sides or decks. Scratch 6 Japanese carriers.
Probably no Japanese CAP, as the Japanese would not be expecting any attack.
I would imagine the Air Wing would attack just prior to the Japanese take off.
Probably would have changed the course of history........
