I am attempting to compile a list of all the aircraft used in the evacuation of Darwin in the aftermath of the cyclone. I am aware that RNZAF C-130H NZ7003 participated but details are sketchy. I would be very pleased to hear from anyone who was with 40 Sqn at the time or indeed anyone who can provide accurate notes on the RNZAF involvement.

A brief description of No.40 Squadron's involvement on the Darwin operation can be found in Geoffrey Bentley and Maurice Conly's 'RNZAF Portrait of an Air Force 1937-1987', pages 169-170. It doesn't mention the specific C130 used.

This may help - there is a list of Tracy aircraft here which indicates it was NZ7003 www.adastron.com/aviation/tracy/tracy.htm"C-130H NZ7003 from 40 Sqn RNZAF positioned Whenuapai-Richmond-Townsville on 27DEC. On 28DEC the aircraft positioned TSV-DRW to operate its first relief flight. The aircraft operated at least two flights DRW-SYD-YSRI as shown above. NZ7003 was based with two crews at RAAF Base Richmond. The aircraft operated Richmond-Amberley-Laverton-Richmond on 01JAN75. The aircraft returned to NZ on 04JAN75 when it positioned Richmond-Sydney-Whenuapai. Sourced from the log book of Michael Sommerville who was Captain of one of the crews."

Confirming that the site quoted is mine. I have made considerable progress since posting the original question thanks to input from many people on several forums. I was planning to post an update here but AussieBob beat me to the punch. I have established that there was a posed press photo with some of the crew in front of NZ7005 but this aircraft was not used on the Tracy operation.

I wonder if the likes of the NZ Herald, Dominion, ODT, Christchurch Press, etc would have covered stories on the RNZAf assisting, and if those articles might have photos that help your research? Maybe it's worth emailing the National Library and getting them to check what's there in the newspapers on the dates involved?
