I've just finished a Tamiya F-51 as a 1 Squaddron TAF machine using the excellent Ventura decals. This one completes my line up of the Squadrons All except the Otago machine, which is Hasegawa, are Tamiya, All the decals are Ventura. Thanks for looking.

Nice work! All four TAF Squadrons represented. Did the Otago Squadron not use checkers on the roundel boards then? I've not seen the 'chevron' version in photos before.

In early 53 the chevron style markings were adopted by No 4 squadron but NZ 2429 was the only aircraft to which they were applied. prior to the chevrons it wore the US bars. It was subsequently written off in a forced landing on Rangitikei Beach on the raumai Range.27 Feb 1953 Used as a target there and later recovered by Murray Lane, then to Don Subritzky and later to Phillip Warner in the UK for parts for NZ 2406 restoration

Very nice collection. Only a couple more RNZAF squadrons to go to complete the set. No. 75 Squadron, No. 42 Squadron and I think No. 14 Squadron all used the Mustang at different times too.

I'm sure there must be some in Southern Cross Mustangs. I'll see what I can find when I get a chance. There's a famous shot of No. 42 Squadron in formation with a Dakota, Avenger, Mustang, Devon and something else, back when they were the utility and research squadron.

Thanks, I knew that 42 had used a couple as target tugs, but I was unaware that either 75 or 14 Squadrons had used them.

NZ2422 served with No. 75 Squadron as a target tug and used for special weapons courses.
NZ2406 served with No. 14 Squadron for the same roles.

Thanks for the photo and the info, I'm tempted by the very shiny '20. I found out the following:
Four aircraft; NZ2402, 03, 20 and 23, were retained for a short while as target tugs supplementing the Avengers with 42 Squadron at Ohakea. A rigid pylon was attached to the starboard side and painted in Red and White stripes.
I wonder if anyone has a photo of the position of the pylon?
Thanks again for taking the time to post.

There is a photo and discussion on the forum about the target tug gear, somewhere. Either in the Postwar RNZAF section or maybe the Modelling section, not sure. it was a few years back. The photo was in colour and from a 1950's airshow I think.

There are drawings and photos for the TT gear and the various colour schemes in SCM; contact me direct if you need more. Red Roo Models does the TT frame as a photo etch in various scales. David Muir Author 'Southern Cross Mustangs'
