TAF P 51D Mustang Cockpit Question

Hi All

Quick question if I may?

I have looked through various photos I have access to and
other places, but nothing giving me a definitive answer.

What was the head rest attached to in the cockpit behind the
pilot ?

I have seen various renditions of the cockpit and read various comments, that seem to have the amour and head rest as one,
and other comments etc where the amour and head rest were
separate.

How did it work in the RNZAF P 51's?

Any comments would be most welcome

To me it appears as if they screw onto the armour plate at attachment points on the side, presumably to make it easy to replace them if they are damaged.

All non-RNZAF Mustangs shown below; but I don't imagine they would be any different - although there seems to be some belief amongst the modeling community
that they did come in a two or maybe three different shapes......
