You might be surprised to learn the RAF were the first to put the Fort into actual combat, entering RAF service in May 1941. 20 B-17Cs were allocated to 90 Sqn. Interestingly, the Fortress I was criticised as being unsuitable for high altitude day operations. It was the small tail version.

That's a No. 214 Sqn Fortress, Luther, and they do look great with roundels! They were used for electronic countermeasures jobs which involved flying in the stream and jamming German radio and radar transmissions. 214 had been a Main Force Stirling unit before joining 100 Group with Fortresses. A very good account of their activities, and the only lengthy one I've come across to date, can be found in Murray Peden's superb A Thousand Shall Fall.
I've seen photos of the earlier Fortresses in the Med but can't remember if this was part of the 'trials' done by No, 90 Sqn (think so). They were later used by Coastal Command, IIRC, as were a number of later-model Fortresses.

Shorty you have how many years under your belt of learning this stuff? 8 months ago I didn't even know what a B-17 was.I'm here to learn.I would say I need to read more and you need a Kitten or something to cheer you up.

Also the RAF flew B24s in Coastal Command as well. The RAAF flew B24s from Northern Australian airfields against the Japanese. Didn't a USAAF B17 crash at Whenuapi during WWII?
