I have been working on converting Pavla's 1/72 Grumman Widgeon into a Super Widgen. I grabbed the engines and props from the Airfix Beagle Basset (same continental engines) & with a whole lot of reshaping/filing filling & sanding of engines and lower hull... I created a G-44A (TEAL conversion) Now I'm just looking for a livery...

Great models. The first plane I ever flew in was one of Tourist Air Travels Widgeons!

thanks, I've been rather busy building models this summer (more than usual)...The wife has been working late nights (she is a senior accountant) all of January (Hard close, year end stuff). So its kept me out of trouble.... The Super widgeon will probably wind up in Mt Cook Markings as 'CFA or 'AVM...bit like the goose I did a few years back...

Those models look fantastic! I would love to see one done in Sea Bee Air livery.

Its quite involved to do a Super widgeon conversion The conversion took a whole lot of reference to various photographs from different angles as I couldn't find much out there in the way of drawings etc for the TEAL converted Super-widgeons that were done in NZ. If you can find a side on profile photo of a super-widgeon that works best. Get a similar photo or line drawing of a standard widgeon as a cross reference and scale both so that they are the same. I will crop photos/drawings so that the edge of the image just frames the very front/rear edges of the nose & tail. If you import the images into word/photoshop you can then scale them to 1/72 (once you know the dimensions of the full sized plane) & then you can have references for all the reshaping work. For correct props & engines (IO-470s) I used the old Airfix Beagle Bassett Kit (which is out of production), these occasionally show up on Ebay for sale. I chopped these bits out of the airfix kit & put them together, howver quite a bit of filing & shaping is still required (beagle's cowlings are oval in cross-section & the widgeon's are square!). I make my own decals, these ones are ink jet & again scaled/traced from original photos using paintshop pro/photoshop software. The thin pinstriping, titles & graphic were done as inkjet decals. If you'd like a copy of these or Tourist Air Travel I can provide some for a small fee. The basic blue cheat lines & blue part of the cowls were either masked & painted directly (the curves of the nose were hard to decal) or consist of painted decal sheet trimmed to shape. If you'd like a copy of these or Tourist Air Travel I can provide some for a small fee.

Harry, sorry for the late reply mate. I would love a set of decals to help my project along if you could help me there. Might need a few pointers on the changes I will need to make as well.
Cheers Anthony

Hi Anthony, not a problem re the decals, PM me with your address details & I'll send you a set, (perhaps include a a couple of $ to offset cost of decal paper & printing etc) I can probably put a copy of the TAT ones on the same decal sheet.
Re the conversion, it becomes an exercise of looking at as many photos as you can from various angles, scaling the photos where possible & shaping by eye to some extent. The Bassett cowls were reshaped & built up using a combination of plastic card and filler.
This one was modified to a G-44A, so I deepened the vee hull under the nose but you can just as easily do an original G-44 hull (unmodified from the kit) which would suit BGQ, BAY and CHG

Hi Harry - Which kit did you use for the Goose and did you convert the wingtips and floats and props yourself

Hi Andrew, that is the Sword Kit, I believe that it was re-released as an AZ model kit a few years ago. They are becoming scarce again but they do pop up from time to time on Ebay. a couple there currently... www.ebay.com/itm/Sword-1-72-Grumman-Goose-Amphibian-plastic-model-kit-/321183855263?pt=Model_Kit_US&hash=item4ac80cb29fwww.ebay.com/itm/1-72-Sword-GRUMMAN-JRF-GOOSE-Amphibian-MINT-/360716607230?pt=Model_Kit_US&hash=item53fc629efeYes the float mod was my own mod. I originally built ZK-ENY in SeaBee Air markings & worked from closeup photographs I took in BC Canada of a Pacific Coastal Goose (I have also built a Pacific Coastal Goose by the way ). To do the conversion the outer wingtip is simply lopped off. DFC has 'catalina' style tip floats (different from ENY and the Pacific Coastal aircraft) so I worked mostly from old pics of DFC and some shots of Avalon Gooses in California. The propellers are 1/72 white metal Dove props with the pitch angle reversed (twisted) as Pommy A/C have props that spin in the wrong direction If you need some close up pics, I can forward you these of the floats/mechanisms etc... By the way, I'm currently building another Pavla Widgeon, this one will be ZK-BAY in the colours of Amphibian Airways, I'll post pics soon

Hi fellas, Anthony, if you find yourself in Auckland, poke your nose into AVSPECS. Take your camera. They've got the last super widgeon that Seabee Air used in the hangar undergoing restoration. Original engines and more corroded aluminium than you've ever seen!! Detailed modellers paradise!
Matt Ps how's our 3d kahu cockpit coming along?
