Looks like the galley's about the only bit that hasn't been upgraded. Looks the same as it did 25 years ago.....

Does anyone know if a P-3K is due to take part in the next Joint Warrior exercise in the UK (scheduled from 16-26 April). There are supposed to be six P-3s (and a P-8) taking part, but are the Orions all US ones?

All the onboard photos were 02 , yet to be upgraded. At the briefing , we were told that 5 Sq is juggling SAR tasks with upgrades and available aircraft , hours are very tight with little training time available for any new crews. They said that the upgraded aircraft is still in the "Is my computer system talking to yours ?" development phase and the pressure is on as the conversions at Woodbourne will be coming through much faster than the first one. However rednose does fly circuits over our place , with all the extra aerials it looks the part.

Funny how not long ago a review said we had too many Orions and one needed to be sold! Now we have too few...
So the red nose actually flies then? It's not just a cover?

JT 16th – 26th April - Exercise Joint Warrior ‘Joint Warrior’ is the largest international defence exercise held in the UK. The exercise – which takes place in locations ranging from Faslane to the north west tip of Scotland at Cape Wrath - is intended to test NATO forces across the full spectrum of 21st century conflict, from fending off air attacks and hunting mines and submarines to putting - and, crucially, supporting - troops ashore The following aircraft are expected to operate from RAF Lossiemouth for the duration of the exercise: 6 x P3 1 x P8 2 x Atlantique 4 x Hawk 3 x Sea Hawk 60 7 x DA200 can'y find whose P3's they are but would most probably be from NATO country's etc

Not necessarily NATO at all. There were 5 or 6 US ones and a Canadian Aurora at the last one (yes, they are in NATO, but I guess you meant European members). The RNZAF last sent a P-3 in 2008, but it had to scoot when the volcanic cloud briefly lifted: jimtheeagle.blogspot.co.uk/2011/06/ashes-to-ashes.html At the time they thought they wouldn't be back for a couple of years as they got the K2 into service. You can argue that it isn't quite there yet, but neither is the P-8, and an exercise full of submarines is a great proving ground for all the new kit.. Jim

Actually, NZ's clutch of designs from that era: C-130, P-3, UH-1H make quite an historical statement. Yes, quite right - back in those days the NZ government gave a f*ck about defence.

Wasn't the Volcano in 2010? I was there for a Joint Warrior in 2009, so we have definately been there since 2008. But no, no RNZAF P-3 this year. Ah yes, you're right, it was 2010. Thanks for the info. Jim
