It looks more like the Wither Hills in the background than the Port Hills, and note the stopbank too which sugests Woodbourne.

I have just been checking both images against back drops of both the port and wither hills and the first image to me is at Woodbourne and the bottom one is definately wigram. The only other thing that is making it not 100% sure is there is woman wearing a grey jacket and black hat that is in the top image but looks like she is in the bottom image too.

Just viewed the thread and you guys have already worked it out. Woodbourne, Crowd close to Freighter, Similar to Wigram photo.
Ok, so when did the Bristol Freighters first arrive in NZ. It must have been about then and look at how the crowd have been drawn over to it for the engine starts.
Could it be ?
Air Display at Woodbourne RNZAF Woodbourne, 23rd of March 1952 A No. 75 Squadron Mosquito NZ2331 took part and crashed after the display, killing both crew. The pilot made a low run over the airfield and then attempted a slow roll at a height of approximately 200 feet. The aircraft struck a tree and crashed into the ground.
The crashsite, and presumably the tree, would have been just out of shot to the left of the pic. About 1mile out from the airfield I believe. Someone here may be able to say exactly where it was. This photo may have been taken before lunchtime on the Saturday, - the day before the crash.
The lady in the Wigram photo is Mrs Maguire, I could not say who the lady at Woodbourne was.
