Can anyone tell me what rank the shoulder stripes represent here? Lance G Andrewes, NZ413802. Taken with Catalina crew, 6 Squadron, Halavo Bay, 1945 (from one of Jenny Scott's wonderful Flickr set). His highest rank was Squadron Leader but just trying to confirm if he was S/L at the time this was taken? Cheers, Chris

Hi Chris, the shoulder stripes are that of a Flight Lieutenant. Cheers, Paul

Thanks Jenny, hopefully we can fill in all the other gaps in our knowledge of his service record - the photo was a great start!
We now have him at:
- ITW Wereroa, Levin, Airman Pilot u/t July 1941 - CFS Tauranga, Pilot Instructor's School, ? - No. 1 SFTS Wigram, Pilot Instructor, 1943. - Flt Lt 6 Squadron, Halavo Bay, Solomons, 1945 - some time in 45 promoted to Squadron Leader
Cheers, Chris

That second entry would be CFS, or the Central Flying School of the RNZAF, which is where pilots learned to become instructors. There was no T in the acronym.

If you are talking about the Andrewes of Hokianga , Des Andrewes at 91 is still pretty fit and well, living in Sandringham Auckland. Des did a tour as a navigator on 622 Squadron, give him a call. If it is the Lance we knew as Uncle Lance there will be plenty of stories to tell.

Hi Peter,
Yes, the Andrewes of Hokianga, actually Kohokohu! I am an old friend of Des's nephew Wayne, Lance's son, and yes, I'm sure there would be plenty of stories ... Wayne often talked about his Uncle Des. Didn't realise you were part of the 'family' Peter!
Lance was a very nice guy, never changed much from the photo you see here, with a real twinkle in the eye, very kind and a great sense of fun. And I must have met Des, although probably 35 years ago now (I see him up there in today's header).
Wayne has Lance's logbook, somewhere in a shed, so hopefully between that and his service record we can fill in most of the gaps.
Thanks for the correction Dave, yes I was in a hurry when I wrote that! Cheers, Chris
