What is the small vertical aerial on the lower part of the vertical fin for, and when was it introduced? I always thought it was a Kahu mod, but early photos of Kahu'd jets don't show it, and neither does a 1988 Kahu cutaway featured in Flight International (prepared with RNZAF assistance). Idly curious as always

Not sure about anything to do with your A-4Ks but this diagram from the A4M manual may help you. From this diagram which number is closest to the aerial position you refer to on the Kahu? This page has a discussion: rnzaf.proboards43.com/index.cgi?board=Postwar&action=display&thread=1166577691&page=1The graphic below is from the A-4M Skyhawk NATOPS, which may or may not be relevant. [Hump on early RNZAF A-4Ks was empty.] Phil.

The info on that image is wrong.
It's actually the ARC 159 UHF antenna. It was moved there after/as part of the Kahu update.
From memory, the original Kahu design had this antenna located forward of the nosewheel door but testing on the prototypes found poor reception with it located here so it was moved to the position on the tail

The original Kahu ARC-159 antenna location was under the nose forward of the NLG bay. In this loacation it suffered from poor performance and high electromagnetic interference (EMI) from all the Kahu boxes in the nose which were very "dirty" electronically (they emmitted a lot of electrionic noise which could interfere with UHF and VHF radios). So it was moved to the spine by the fin. The interference problem went away but it still reportedly suffered from poor TX/RX performance (just a crap radio).
