Just before New Year I was visited by an old mate whom I both went to school with and was in the RNZAF with. We were chatting about the current poor state of this country's defence forces compared with when we joined up in January 1989.
I mentioned how it worries me that when the RNZAF continues to be doenscaled and killed off, it's not just a loss of capability, training and bonafide defence of the nation, but also a huge loss cultrurally as the RNZAF is phased out. Before long the culture, language, styles and customs of the RNZAF will be gone.
Alan agreed, and he had one of his strokes of genius. He suggests that the military should declare themselves independant of New Zealand, and each military base become a self-serving republic. That way they could defend themselves against closure as the NZ Govt no longer would have jurisdiction over them. After all, the military runs on its own law system already and doesn't necessarily need Parliamentary law.
Let face it, for trading goods the navy has a port, and the RNZAF has airports. They could operate the training schools as commercial ventures and make money for an economy.
And if helen wanted to do anything about it she couldn't, as the independent military republics of Whenuapai, Ohakea, Devonport, Waiouru, etc would have all the guns, and the trumps cards. Woody valley even has the Strike Wing which would come back rapidly. Plus I'm certain they'd have a fair amount of backing from the public too.
So, what do you reckon? Good idea? It's so crazy, it might just bloody work! :-)
