NZ land speed record setBy Russell Blackstock Email Russell 8:30 AM Sunday Oct 28, 2012 Eddie Freeman hits 383km/h. It could well have been the fastest thing on the Ohakea Air Force Base runway since our Skyhawks were mothballed. And Kiwi speedster Eddie Freeman certainly had the afterburners on when his Lamborghini smashed the New Zealand land speed record yesterday. Freeman averaged an incredible 355.485km/h. The previous record stood at 348.23km/h. The Castrol Trophy for the land speed record had been held by Owen Evans since 1996. Evans nearly paid with his life when he lost control of his Porsche 911 Turbo during one of his attempts, a horrific crash that was caught on camera. An elated Freeman said he too had been shaken about. "It was pretty intense. There was poor visibility and the car was vibrating but things held up well and I'm delighted." Freeman was attempting the record in a Lamborghini Superleggera, a supercar producing 530bhp and capable in its standard specification of a top speed of 315km/h. The $450,000 car was modified at one of the world's leading automotive tuners in the US to prepare it for the attempt. During the record-breaking run, he hit a top speed of 383km/h. Evans, yesterday racing at the Pukekohe raceway, extended his congratulations to Freeman. "People don't realise how difficult it is to achieve speeds like that and I'll be more than happy to hand the trophy over to Eddie," Evans said. - Herald on Sunday www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10843423

I swear I did nearly that on the same runway 20 years ago in the old Monaro! Well it felt like it.... Used to have a few good races there back in the day didnt they?

Nah! I held that record in a Landrover while being chased by a USN C121 which I was leading in but who kept increasing his speed to a point wher I had to divert on to the Grass. Mind you, he did think he had a bomb on board!

The world record land speed for a man, is apparently held by the crew of a RAF Shackleton at Ballykelly when a depth charge fell out of the bomb bay while they were all standing around it.

Remember that chap Owen Evans.....I think he held a record for the fastest speed on a public road. Something like 325 kph in his Lighting Direct Porshe race car up on Goudies road near Reporoa in the 1990s. Goudies road had a strait about 6 k's long, I think he crashed on the second or third go at it...... Quite a bad crash to from memory...

I drove past the said Lambo when coming back from a trip to Palmy. Miss Sam said "I don't care what it is, it's ugly!"

So is that an NZ only absolute LSR record? And what's a Skyhawk's liftoff and touchdown speed?

A Skyhawk's takeoff ground speed depends on its all up weight and wind on the nose but would be around 150kts IAS.
There was a piece on Campbell Live just now about it. He was lucky there was an access road off to the side of the ILS antennas on 09 otherwise he would have done a "Dobbo" and cleaned them (and his car!) out! As it was, he only just stopped before the fence at the end of the road!

So is that an NZ only absolute LSR record? For the 1km flying distance for a road registered car... Owen Evans still holds the record for the mile (and the Castrol Trophy).

just slightly higher than the masterton express Mate....the way some of the idiot motorists behave around level crossings in Wairarapa, I definitely wouldn't want to be going anywhere near that fast. I swear some of them have absolutely no idea what a red octagonal sign with STOP on it means. Likewise, I also swear many of them don't have a clue what two alternately flashing red lights mean either.

I *555'd one for driving around the lowered barrier here in ChCh a few years back. They just got through and a freight train came on through. Wasn't the first the time I'd seen that.

now skyhawkdon, i know they said on campbell live and you say he was lucky there was an access road off to the side of the ils antennas on 09 otherwise he would have cleaned them out and he only just stopped before the fence at the end of the road i was there from 10am till 3pm allmost in line with the flags that they had put up at the sanson end of the runway you could say i had the best seat in the house so i saw all what he was getting up too he did not have to go down that metal road to stop at all he could have just turned left long before that road because the speed he was doing as he went on to this road he was doing long before he got there he was just putting a show on for tv if you saw the tv view from the inside of the car you will understand what i am getting at.

It looked like it was for real to me what was on Campbell Live! He was fair flying down that access road... if it was just for the camera then that was just plain stupid!

Now would I be right in saying that it was the final day of 75 Sqn etc with the big bash that night and things that Dobbo went for a wee drive. Was it his car and did he do much damage Alcohol a factor I presume
