I am coming to the end of this painting of a RNZAF catalina in the Pacific rescuing a Dauntless crew. Be interested in your comments. Still the fine details to put in.

WOW!!! That is really nice! ;D
I know you have not yet finished it, but you have the Catalina down pat and the downed aircrew also, their life raft is really well done!
Thanks for posting
Regards
Alan

Really nice job!
Didn't the US Navy aircrew members put on red and yellow skull caps when they were downed in the sea, so they stood out better? I'm sure I have read that.

Or the all-yellow RAF type - the RAF first dreamed up this type of cap! Also curious that the RNZAF Catalina seems to have an American star marking on nose, although I realize the "fine detail" has yet to be completed. Another point which may or may not be relevant is that the emergency equipment carried by US Navy (and RNZAF and probably also RAF aircrew) was the fluorosene dye (very bright medium green colour I think) which stained a large area around the comparatively small life raft to give a larger object to see from higher-flying aircraft. You can see the painted over star marking in several RNZAF Catalina photos.
You're right about the dye colour and its use, but it would spoil the great job done on that lovely tropical sea though. The dye was almost the colour of the light sticks that people use these days in emergencies (and in night clubs).

Given the quality of this work I'm interested in hearing if you'll do any more! Great stuff, I like it. I would love to see a Dauntless, when you have time ;-)

this is the painting finished. I have added also a close up of the cat. The painting has been done for Ron Ward here in Napier who asked if I would do it for the Catalina Preservation Society so they could auction the painting to raise funds. It is 950mmx750mm oil on canvas so it is not a small painting. The last time I did a painting for auction (for the Napier ATC) it raised over $3,000 for them. it was of the 485 squadron of two spitfire IX's taking off in France. I will be giving the painting to Ron in the next couple of weeks after it has had a chance to dry. I hope there is someone out there that likes it that has deep pockets so the money can go to help restore the cat.

Very nice indeed. Unfortunately I do not have a spare $3000 or so right now. My dentist should be able to bid a substantial sum though.
(XX-T was PBY-5 NZ4017, which survived until 1951).
