How many of the Cessna Birddogs are there in new Zealand? And also their civil equivalents, the Cessna 170 (I think?).
Is the Birddog essentially the same as a C170? Or are there drastic military alterations?
I know that there is at least one flying in orange colours and I think i have seen two in green US Army colours. How many are there around? Are there any others under restoration or in sheds awaiting rebuild?
Are any of the NZ-based examples real Vietnam/Laos war veterans?

the C170 and Bird Dog are very different beasts! Although derived from the C170, almost everything was changed - the most obvious being the two place tandem fuselage rather than the 4 seat cabin. The engine installation is radically different, as are the wings, including a different flap hinge arrangement with huge travel. the undercarriage is heavier and has castoring mainwheels for crosswinds etc. The tail feathers are about the least changed bit, but even they have significant differences. In terms of NZ survivors, the CAA register shows 5 C170 variants (not counting early C172 / Tailwheel C172 / 175 variants) and 4 O1 Variants

Thanks Bruce, Cessnas all look the same to me, except for Golden Eagles of course.
I wonder if there are any others not on the register? I'm surprised there are only five C170's.

Available only to Registered Users, but when I hit Register it says 'The Address is not valid" It's good to see you're making good progress with this archive though William.

Pretty sure the orange one is a real veteran and may have a few patches to prove it.

The Bird Dog in the Warbirds hangar at Ardmore has patches over bullet holes in the fuselage!

There is another on its way to NZ, Bird Dog that is.
As mentioned above, very, very different to a C-170. Nice flying aeroplane.

There is another on its way to NZ, Bird Dog that is. Excellent! I have a soft spot for FAC machines, so it's nice to hear another coming.

The Bird Dog (name split in two is the correct, read official - form) was the Cessna model 305 - not certain how Cessna came up with that particular number! I think it is realy true that Cessna model numbers make no real sense to anybody and were probably dreamed up by the PR department as they are supposed to sound "cool". David D

The new Bird Dog was mentioned in the register review of the latest NZ Aviation News, unfortunately I don't remember the rego. Hopefully we'll see something of it soon.

I'm pretty certain I've seen it at Ardmore parked outside the Aerotech hangar within the last few weeks.

The new aircraft is ZK-DAJ, #22548 ex 51-12234 and then N4728S, N234BD, N40SD & ZK-DAJ.
By searching those registrations on the internet, there are serveral photos. The odd thing with N40SD, it wears the c/n as the military serial number!

Cool, thanks for the info delticman.
Ando, that's cool! The Bird Dog strikes me as a great "starter" warbird project.
