I'm going to dredge this up having come across a link to here on Britmodeller. Concerning the picture of Flt Lt Thomas ('Pop') Ness & his shoulder patch, I'm seeing a New Zealand patch with the ZEA part of the words obscured by a fold/crease in the uniform at that point. FWIW. Steve.

I would tend to agree Steve. When the W of NEW and the AL of ZEAL are on a very flat angle, they show continuous lines as a solid white - whereas an E would hardly show at all, the ZE would be missing in the dent of the crease. jm2c

Sitting fifth from the left is my father Squadron-Leader Frank "Spud" Murphy (1917-1997). I think that Ian Waddy is sitting on his left (his son David farms on the South Island). I have just posted a few more photos with names attached to my web site - angelabailey.photoshelter.com

Just for interest here is a great photo (credited on the back to Sport & General) of No. 486 (NZ) Squadron at RAF Wittering in the Hurricane era. I recognise Harvey Sweetman, standing sixth from left with his hands in his pockets, and I think Brian Thompson is standing eighth from left. Does anyone recognise other faces?

I have this photo and have been told the guy standing at the far right Was my uncle , john woodgate, He was killed flying into a mountain in Scotland in heavy fog. The crash Site was rediscovered a few years back and a brass plaque was erected. Small parts of the craft was forwarded to me. He is buried at Troon.
Trust this fills in a blank.
