Bruce, it's a AIM-9 training round. (Don't worry, I had no idea what Calum meant either until I found an earlier post about them. )

Captive Air Training Missile.
Blue sidwinder without fins, but with real seeker head. Carried on LAU7 launcher, carried more often than not on the A4, usually on Station 1, sometimes on STN 5, never on STN3 as it wasn't wired for sidewinder.
Acted like a real round as far as symbology in the HUD, interaction with the radar and A-A modes in the NAS.

usually on Station 1, sometimes on STN 5, never on STN3 as it wasn't wired for sidewinder. Phil - STA's 1,2,4,& 5 were all capable of carrying/simulating/firing an AIM-9 (post Kahu). The Sidewinder Control System was capable of handling 4 active missiles at once - as you fired one it automatically stepped to the next active one. In each wing there was a Sidewinder Interface Unit (SIU) which could handle 2 missiles. BTW what is happening with the Macchi sale to the US? All has gone quiet after a flurry of activity before Christmas? Cheers Don

Hi Don, I know all 4 stns could carry them, but this was not 'normally' seen in service. I don't recall ever fitting one to STNs 2 or 4.
Our SCS was also capable of SEAM (Sidewinder Expanded Aquisition Mode) which allowed the seaker head in the active missile to be slaved to the radar, quite clever eally, and a big leap in capability over the old boresight Gs we used to have, and the Ps used by some of our asian allies.
Haven't heard any more about the macchis, the word before Christmas was that they were out of here, but all has gone quiet again.

All the RAN A-4Gs were modified to carry 4 AIM-9B Sidewinders (to be carried on the underwing stations 1, 2, 4 & 5) for ‘Air Defence of the Fleet’ duties. I imagine this capability was retained when the remaing 10 RAN Skyhawks were bought by the RNZAF? Phil.
