Hi everyone, I have a little problem... I have been planning to attend the Oshkosh Airshow 2013 on my way back from England next year. I had been offered a ride by means of the EAA's rideshare service from Dallas to OShkosh and back in a C182. That would have been great as the flight covers a lot of the midwest, so I get to see a bit of the country. Dallas also has great connecting flights from the UK. I have just purchased my airfares for the airline legs. Unfortunately this morning I received news that the chap who I was going to fly with has been killed in a microlight accident. Bit of a shock as he seemed to be a good bloke. This has therefore screwed up my plans for the US section of the trip and I really need to make alternative arrangements pretty quick. Is anyone else from the forum planning on going to OSH 2013? Do you want to fly in? One option could be to meet up somewhere and rent an aircraft. alternatively, does anyone have any contacts in the USA who are going and will have a spare seat? I am fairly fixed on dates - arrive in USA 30 July, leave 5 July (due to leave bookings) and although Dallas is my current port of entry, I can probably change this to somewhere within a days flying time of Oshkosh. I was hoping to camp with the plane on the airfield...
Does anyone know of someone?.....

The Fisk Arrival is the official name of the legendary arrival sequence for Airventure. This is the one where you hear controllers giving instructions to aircraft to "rock your wings", turn over the gravel pit etc. Aircraft converge over the town of Ripon, to the Southwest of Oshkosh, chose a suitable aircraft to follow behind and stream single file following the railway lines to the town of Fisk. At Fisk a special control station is set up to issue instructions to arriving aircraft, and they are separated into streams for each of the active runways (generally two operate at once) The aircraft then listen to Oshkosh tower, who tell give them their landing clearances. At no time do arriving aircraft ever talk to the controllers, its all continous instructions from the ground acknowledged by wing rocking. It is extremely effificient and can land hundreds of aircraft per hour - the Oshkosh tower is recognised as "the worlds busiest control tower" during Airventure week. the procedure is actually fairly simple and I'd love to fly it (even as a passenger) just to get the whole experience of Oshkosh.

It must be something of an aviation equivalent to the great wildebeest migration in Africa. I know every year a few get killed in the trample.

I sat at the lake off the end of the OSH runway 4 years ago... all Sunday afternoon soaking-up the "different plane every 45 seconds" spectacle. Well worth viewing if you are not "truely flying in".
