The creator of some of the most popular kids' series of the 1960's, 70's and 80's has died. Gerry Anderson passed away in his sleep yesterday aged 83. He was responsible for bringing the world some brilliant action puppet shows through Supermarionation, as well as live action shows, with popular series like:
Thunderbirds Stingray Captain Scarlett Joe 90 Terrahawks Space 1999 UFO Fireball XL5
Rest in Peace

To a kids growing up in the early 70's those shows were just magic! Such creativity from those guys. Watching Stingray never helped my swimming skills though.... We mourn great creative talent from years ago, yet now there isnt much at all thats noteworthy...sigh....

You're correct that very little these days stands out like it used to. However this morning I went to see The Hobbit at the cinema in 3-D, 48 frames per second, and I thought it was utterly brilliant. Way better and more enjoyable than I expected. Sir Peter Jackson and his Wingnut Films and Weta Workshop colleagues are perhaps the real stand out creative people of this era, as well as The Hobbit I recently thoroughly enjoyed their film Tintin too. Those guys and girls there are really a cut above the rest. It makes me proud to be a kiwi.

R.I.P Gerry Anderson. I thoroughly enjoyed his shows and long time since I saw Fireball XL5. Pretty sure that was pre Thunderbirds. When I was a kid it wasn't a fort or an aeroplane that I wanted to build as a hut, but the Thunderbirds hangar on Tracy Island. I had a cousin who was as taken with the show as I was and we spent many a year trying to figure out how we could do it I saw all the shows except Terrahawks; can't remember that one. Gerry Anderson had such a talent and imagination plus the ability to take those ideas and make a very good show or movie out of them. Those talents are rare and he'll be sorely missed. He bought such joy to many of us.

I remember getting excited because the latest episode of Thunderbirds was about to come on but my two all time favorite shows were live action, being UFO and Space:1999. I had a tradition where I had a model of one of the Interceptors from UFO which I placed on the top of the TV before it was due to start. Hogans Heroes was on before it and man was I wound up when the credits for the end of HH rolled up because I knew what was next! I did wonder at the time why the female staff had to wear purple wigs on the Moonbase.........didn't mind the short skirts though! ;D

Goodbye to the jerkilly-moving puppets and the over-doing it explosions.

Well I'm working on the next generation of fans. My now 5 yr old got up very early one morning about a year ago, flicking through the channels and what did I find, Thunderbirds!! We watched the episode and he spent the rest of the day playing it back out. We made cardboard rockets and such, now this Xmas he got the full DVD set of all Thunderbirds episodes and a toy Tracy Island complete with Thunderbirds 1 to 5, lots of voice button to push. Needless to say he's pretty happy. Here he is in his Mum made Thunderbird uniform.

Joe 90 was unfortunate for a whole generation of glasses wearing kids when I was much younger.

Thunderbird 6: Anybody know what that was? Thunderbird 5 was the space station so don't think there was a Thunderbird 6 at least in the TV series. Wikipedia mentions a movie called Thunderbird 6 though and an airship? maybe that's it?

Thunderbirds was the TV programme I remember clearest from my early childhood, along with Doctor Who. This was back in the days of black and white TV, so it was a real treat to be able to watch the programmes again in colour post-1973/74.
The episodes were always like a mini-movie each time, with exotic locations, fantastic incidental music, villans, heroes and for a young lad - things being blown up/destroyed, futuristic cars, jets and spaceships -all with that sixties vibe! F.A.B!!
Also enjoyed Captain Scarlet, UFO and Space 1999. Yes, as a glasses wearer since starting school, I was occasionally referred to as Joe90 lol.
There was a documentary about Gerry Anderson on Sky last year. It's probably out there on You Tube some where.
Still watchable TV programmes and great to see that it appeals to the new generation of wide eyed youngsters - lesterpk (above)

Yes I've started introducing another generation to it. No 1 grandson aged 7. Watched Series 1 episode 1 (Fireflash) last night wide eyed and grinning. His father loved the series too and still does. I am most jealous lesterpks kids - an International Rescue uniform. ;D ;D

Captain Scarlet was one of the best TV shows ever, scared the crud out of me. But I loved it. Space 1999 too. One of my hobbies is collecting old toys, Action Man and Action Force. A LOT of the collectors of that generation are nuts about supermaraination and there are bucket loads of tie ins. Anderson had a huge impact on my generation, and earlier. I'm pretty sure I have some Captain Scarlet Dinky toys floating around at home somewhere. Loved the angel jets.

Just checked, they are Dinky. Labelled 1993. Got 2 Interceptors, Spectrum Patrol Car, Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle and the Spectrum Passenger Jet.
Not sure the Patrol car counts as a super car. The pursuit vehicle is pretty cool, has hatches and things all over it.
Awesome. I love being a big kid.
