Anyone here done any in NZ? Seems like the perfect way to get fit to me! Better than chasing a silly white ball if you ask me...

Going to look at BRA soon does that count? Only if the BRA your looking at gets cranky at you and you have to hightail it ;D

BRA doesn't count anymore. We have all got fit chasing that and bringing it back to the SI. ADX could qualify though, there is still a story to be told there.
All the wrecks I have seen recently have ended up in storage with either me or Baz.... are there any others still about ?

Perhaps another that is at Dairy Flat now but it is in the stages of rebuilding, but it was a wreck in the shallows at one stage...

Devon 1821 was a wreck when i located it at Dairy Flat but the remains now reside in my garage. Some say it's still a wreck!

I've chased NZ5517 in the New Creek region of Inangahua, an Auster in Little Malaya, and an Oxford way up on the Port Hills. Also hunted for an Avro 626 in a huge hole in the ground near Kaiapoi....

Has anyone ever seen the DC3 that crashed at the top of the south island that they got the engines for the DC3 at GAPS from? Or the one that lost its wing topdressing?

I think I posted photos of that Dak (ZK-AOE), from my visit in 1968, in my "stash" thread

I visited a DC3 crash site in the Port Underwood area ( top of the South Island ) in about 1979 . Not sure if its the one you mean as there was definitly remains of one engine still there and a fairly big piece of one wing . The rest of what was left was just general debris ( presumably left over after salvage ) . If I recall correctly it was was on private land and required getting permission to visit . Access was probably 4wd , but we were on motorbikes and were able to ride almost right up to it ( well the ridge above it anyway )

Been to a few Hudsons around Auckland, afew Corsairs south of Auckland , 1 Dc3 in the Kaimai's, a very complete but sad looking Avenger Nth of Auckland (so sad) and Rukuhia. The stuff at the crash sites is slim pickings, what the airforce didnt take humans have picked and ripped to bits over the years. But from time to time you never know whats guna pop up

Been to a few Hudsons around Auckland, afew Corsairs south of Auckland More info surely I'd love to see a Corsair in the wild or visit another Hudson. Wreckchasing is a large hobby of mine and I've visited 11 wrecks now, mainly in the Lower North Island as that is where I live. As to there being forgotten wrecks I think there will be plenty out there, I plan to visit Vampire NZ5723 which I had co-ords for but have misplaced, it seems to be a wreck with little info on and would be the first Jet I've visited and maybe the last as most Jet era aircraft got helicoptered away soon after their crashes. The P51s near Tongaporutu seem little known from my impression, one had parts recovered to TATAM but otherwise both sound promising in terms of the amount of remains to look at. Some wrecks such as a Tiger Moth in Makara are forgotten about as it is private property, covered by prickly plants and the RNZAF did 'tidying' to boot which means what is left will be buried in a pile. The next wrecks on my list this year are the Lodestar above Waikanae and the Piper at Deadwood ridge, seeing as they have moderate walk times and published coordinates. As a bonus I hope to revisit NZ4573 to look at the main debris field.

It was taken from its site in June 2017 to Classic Flyers Museum at Tauranga Airport where it was lovingly restored to taxiing condition and stands proudly in the museum's main hangar.

From what I have researched, the parts recovered seem to be from NZ2411 and where: the engine in very good nick, full propeller assembly, tail wheel and the guns. Although the guns where not at TATAM when I visited so have likely been spirited away. TATAM is small but they have a lot of fascinating bits and bobs such as turrets from Oxford and Ventura plus a Harvard from Kaikoru that got very close to complete restoration.
There's only three sources online talking about the Tongaporutu wrecks and they were forgotten about quickly at the time as the next day the Tangiwai disaster occurred. But it will be interesting to see how much is left in situ indeed.

You probably have already seen this article from the Tainui Historical Society: www.waitomo.govt.nz/media/wlja5xaf/tainuitradingpostjune.pdfIt appears that the first aircraft discovered was "a mass of red hot wreckage" at the bottom of a large crater. The second aircraft discovered near the coast may be less extensively damaged.

I've visited TATATM on several occasions but my last attempt - the day before my birthday! - was thwarted by a flat tire. Very keen to get back there soon as my last visit was in 2012.
