European Horsemeat Scandal

Most people will be aware of the current scandal of horse meat (instead of beef) appearing in burgers and ready to eat type pasta meals in Europe.

This could represent an export opportunity for beef and lamb producers here in this part of the world.

Below is the text of an email sent to me from a work colleague that just goes to show that even in the face of such a thing, people can still see the funny side.

(For those too young to know or so old that you've forgotten, you can Google 'Red Rum' and 'Shergar' if you don't get the references.)
FYI Tescos is a supermarket type chain, a little bit like The Warehouse.

I was in Tesco this morning and they had White rum and Dark rum in the spirits section. I asked if Red rum was out of stock or was located in the meat section.



How do you like your burgers? Well done or rare?

I'll have one each way & I prefer mine good to firm.



Is it a coincidence hamburgers is an anagram of Shergars bum...



I think someone is sending me death threats; I woke up this morning and found a Tesco burger on my pillow



Despite the recent news, Tesco’s say their sales of beef burgers remain stable



Two burgers please, easy on the dressage.



They taste even better with a bit of 'filly' on.



The company that supplies Tesco with its burgers has now foalded.

People have found the local butchers again, the general comment is not "oh no Iv'e eaten my little pony,"more a pragmatic " I want to know it what is says on the packet is actually what is inside! europeans eat horse meat, we don't do it in Scotland, lucky I don't eat frozen food much and thats where the problem has been for the most part.

A couple there I hadn't heard, will 'circulate' them.

As kiwitone says, it's not the fact we've eaten plenty of horse, what gets most folk is that we are being sold '100% Irish beef', or at least are being led to believe we are. And the only health concern is that there could be drugs banned from the human food industry in there. Personally I couldn't give a monkeys if there's 100% horse in there. Was looking at an Icelandic restaurant menu the other day, and there was 'tenderloin of horse(just after the 'whale, scallop and lobster' dish).
The other funny thing is how strongly the government is going on about protecting the good name of Irish beef, and how it is so well known and loved. WTF? The stuff is a joke, bland, tasteless muck. Reminds me of the 'scandal' back in 1999 when they found exactly what was going into cattle pellets, everything from waste motor oil to human sewerage, even, allegedly, a container of dogs from the pound.

This should be a wake up call to all of us, in whatever country, we really just do not know what is going into our food.

And the food industry is supposed to be one of the most safe and regulated industries around.............

The problem is, governments can make all the regulations and rules they like, but if they cut services to the bone and don't have anyone capable of enforcing the rules they have made, then things like this will continue to occur.
