The Army are flying UAVs in Waiouru. Has anyone got any pics? An advisory call was heard a couple of days ago by a friend transiting the desert road. Has anyone noted the new danger area (521) near Pahiatua for Uav's ? Seems to be nice and close to Linton. Realy interested to hear about what they are doing.

I have seen pics of the aircraft and footage shot from it. Its about a 2.5m span electric powered glider looking thing. Downward looking camera with overlay of lat/long, real basic but all done in house by NZers. I know a few of my fellow radio control aircraft guys have been involved in manufacturing the airframe for them.

Slightly off topic, but back in the 1970s the DSIR were using 'UAVs' for taking aerial images of crop production on the Canty Plains.
I'm surprised the military has taken so long to pick up on the idea, but I guess with better technology it's a bit more practical for military applications nowadays.
