3.8 in Auckland just after 4pm.
Felt on the North Shore, at least.

Beagle, would you really want to be in the Auckland CBD with all those huge glass buildings around you when a quake hits, no matter what size? I think any quake in Auckland is a major concern given that it's basically all volcanoes underneath too.
And as Auckland is the powerhouse of the economy and is needed to rebuid Christchurch as well as the rest of the economy, we wouldn't want to wish any disaster on that city.
I hope all the hanging aircraft at MOTAT faired ok.

to us in chch thats just someone closing the door. But this is much more important . . . because its us! Actually, in all the excitement we have missed the really important front-page news: Justin Bieber's hamster has died. home.nzcity.co.nz/news/article.aspx?id=163327&fm=psp,tst

It sounded like a massive freight train about to smash through the wall. the ceiling was the base for a car park made from thick heavy slabs of concrete. About 10 feet above me, on the shelves I was beside, were pallets of food. Female staff were screaming. Of course if a major one hit Auckland and did similar damage as to the one here there would be major major ramifications for this country. But as it was only a tiny shake, wasn't even first on the news, the fire dept said no damage, so in reality, it was a non event.

Now c'mon Beagle. Most people in ChCh would still feel a 3.9 at 6Km distance.
Ellie-May Seymour tweeted: "Ok just had a heart attack. There was an earthquake in Auckland."
Lily De Felice said: "Woah earthquake my bed just moved halfway across my bedroom floor."
The last thing the country needs now is a bigger (much) shake in Akl.
As Dave said about the volcanoes, we don't need an awakening there.
I think we all know what a 4 feels like though as you say. Anything smaller can be difficult to detect.

Small quakes are often followed by big quakes, I don't really see it as a joking matter any more. Especially since there were also quakes today in Fiordiland so the plates must be slipping a fair bit.
