Yep only 3 weeks to go so what is everyone doing. Some of you probably already have SKY so are ok. Some after the earthquakes had to replace their broken TV's, so any new ones were fitted with digital freeview.
We had a new 55" in the media room about 2 1/2 years ago, so thats ok, but in the family area and bedroom we had some hand me downs from the inlaws. They were reasonably new but not digital so getting rid of them was going to seem a bit of a waste. Yes if the tree out the back grew money I wuld have loved to have gone in and got 2 brand new LED's but alas, just green leaves in a non rectangular shape grow. so out we went today on the recon trip. pen and paper in hand, a few spare biscuits in front pocket, and 5 stores later we made a decision and is now installed, albeit to just one of the tv's but will be back to get another for the other. IGLOO. yes we got an Igloo box, only because Harvey Norman have a special 1/2 price deal on at the moment. Usually $199, we paid $99. Most of the basic terrestria boxes we were looking at were anywhere from $65 to $125 anyway so I think we have done very well. An improvement in picture which infact wasn't too bad anyway. As I said to her, if we are going to be lying back in bed watching something for a few hours before dozing off, why spent big money on some flash thing that does everything bar brushing ya teeth. Oh well going on a bit here so, the question is what are you others doing or have done. Oh my, have I opened this up to another saga from Baz......

I got given a set-top box for my birthday in December but I still haven't worked out how to get it to work. I plugged it all in as the instructions said and couldn't get any signals. So i put it back into the box and wait till I really need it. Not that there's more than about three things per week worth actually watching these days. I'd have been more keen to get onto digital if the flipping Government hadn't canned TVNZ7.

Our son gave us a Dish TV UHF set top box that doubles as a two channel recorder if you hook up a desktop hard drive to it. Like Dave set it up and it said can't get any signals so yesterday I couriered it back to manufacturers in Hamilton after email correspondence with them. Apparently this appears to be a problem with this brand.

We already had a Sky dish for the lounge TV - a solid two man 32" 100Hz Phillips which I had already de-dusted when she started sparking. We went and bought the last of the CRT TV's in TWH for a paltry sum and contacted our well experienced friendly aerial installer. He said he would be able to give us both HD Freeview and Sky in our bedroom (the TV is not HD quality but...) .
He added a Freeview terrestrial antenna on the roof - line of sight 80kms to Te Aroha mast - brought the cable down to the lounge behind main TV. Added a modulator there that picks up the Sky box out-signal and adds that in to the Free View antenna cable signal as a Channel 1 ordinary. Got a Thompson Freeview decoder for the bedroom for the other end of that cable. That old style new TV receives the FreeView signal in on AV input with the coloured three plug cable.
Ok that gets Freeview to the bedroom, if we click on AV we have that good signal, if we revert back to TV Ch1 we have the Sky signal. Now for the sneaky bit. He gave us a free second hand Sky remote that talks to a repeater transponder system with an IR remote receiver in the bedroom, wireless signal to an LED transmitter back in the lounge that feeds LED's as a string of them on a wire. You fix the last pair to the inside of the glass cabinet window hiding the MySky Decoder in the lounge, (aimed at the respective point on decoder front) and hey presto, you can change the Sky channels from the bedroom!!!
Just another way of doing things and gives us flexibility. We now have a new big Samsung Smart TV in the lounge (the two man TV decided to switch itself off and on whenever...) and he did a Freeview Y junction to provide a cable into the new digital TV for the Freeview HD signals as the TV normal channels.
The new TV also picks up the normal WiFi internet signal and wife can watch YouTube movies as well on the BIG screen. Son had a mate around and they used XBox via HDMI cable into the 50" LED screen that let them do two player team games. Really impressed with the quality of the pixel free picture!! Now I just need a Blue-ray player for the 3D movies.... more expense...
I can get names/brands of equipment - not expensive - if anyone is interested...

Marlborough isn't getting HD Freeview though Yep , and what a bizzare state of affairs that is ! All the new fancy " digital ready " TV's wont work in Blenheim ( not without a top box anyway ) .And to add insult to injury Nelson is getting the HD signal and the cable that feeds it passes through Marlbrough ! I have Sky in the lounge and have purchased top boxes for the bedrooms , however they seem to be fighting my efforts to make them work , so might have to get a professional in .

How come Marlborough isn't getting the HD? Thought that it was going out on the digital terrestrial UHF signal. You're being ripped off.

I could go on here for a few hours with regards the saga my father in law in Blenheim had getting his all sorted out. To cut to the short he went and purchased 2 brand new 3D capable Samsung LED's. A good price he said, but he also got 2 freeview dish recievers. He was having quite a bit of problems regarding the picture getting funny lines through them. he called back the guys who installed the freeview boxes and they came around and around so often, even i knew how many sugars they had in the cups of tea. It took many hours 2-3 times a week for weeks on end with different guys replacing bit and new cords etc and in the end an expert who had been awya on holiday came arround and suggested they try 2 better model boxes which he got and it works perfectly now. He got a couple of bills a few weeks later for 2 new boxes over $400 each plus one for a few hundred man hours in labour. Pretty sure he ripped the man hour one up in their faces, since each time they came around they couldn't fix it.

Think you are right about "Thought that it was going out on the digital terrestrial UHF signal. " in most places - but not here . When they change to digital here the terrestial signal will stop . You will only be able to get TV ( and not HD ) via a dish and a decoder ( Sky or Freeview ) . Freeview ready TV's only accept the HD signal , which we arent getting .

I'm going to hiff my tele in a couple of months and purchase one of THESE. It's a new model and isn't actually available for sale yet, although the Sony Style shops each have one on display. I've already negotiated a deal (considerably cheaper than the list price) with the staff at the Wellington Sony Style store in Willis Street.

I hope NZ TV is better than the drivel and dross over here! I think Dave mentioned that there were only about three programmes a week worth watching and I concur!
The analog signal up here is about to be canned, too, so everyone's charging around getting their all-singing, all-dancing LED/LCD tellies in sizes that make the eyes cross; me, I don't watch a lot and neither do the family, so it'll be a couple of smaller models, and having had a look at what's on offer for the amount I'm willing to spend, Dick Smith, here I come!
