Hi All,
I flew my aircraft (light piston single) to Wellington for a meeting the other day. The guys at Vincent Aviation very kindly hosted me and I parked very close to (almost inside) their hangar. I arrived at 0830 and departed at 1600. The parking charge; a whopping $189!! Add in landing and departure charges and noise charges; the total bill came to $240!! Wow!
I looked at the WIAL website and read through their list of charges prior to the flight but (call me slow) found it very difficult to work out what the charges were going to be. The upshot is that the longer you stay the higher the per hour rate is??!!
The first two hours are 'free' (with an $80 minimum charge??) the second two hours are $20 per hour with each subsequent hour charged at $40 per hour.
So if you're thinking of flying into Wellington be warned...
Cheers,
J.

Sounds like a case of Auckland-International-Airport-itis
They just don't want you around the place, disrupting the smooth flow of their commercial flights.
As they are a public facility, they can't prevent you arriving, but they can charge such a whacking fee that you won't come back and all your mates will stay away as well.

A friend of mine parked a 172 there for a couple of nights and got charged something like $550. Insane.

Apart from your first post being a whine - out of interest had a quick look at the charges and it seems clear enough....whether they are charging too much is another matter I guess...

ChinaPilot,
"Apart from your first post being a whine-"
That's a bit rough. Thanks for the warm welcome...
"whether they are charging too much is another matter I guess..."
That is not another matter; it is the title of the Thread. Clearly I am not the only one who has been caught out. Maybe my post will prevent someone else from being caught out.
Play nice; we probably know each other...

What sort of reply did you get back from the 'Wellington International Airport Ltd' assuming you have complained to them ?

Yes I spoke to a lady from the accounts department and she told me that although the charges have been in place for a while they have only just started rigorously enforcing them...
She agreed that the charges were extreme but that they are clearly set out on the web site. I have to take some responsibility here as, yes they are spelled out but you do have to read the notes pretty carefully to realise that the per hour rate increases the longer you stay ie you pay exponentially more. That to me was the counter-intuitive part.
As it turned out I was so close to the hangar that I successfully argued that I was inside the hangar. I got away with it this time but it will be a problem the next time I have to go to NZWN.

I flew my Jodel D11 into WN Christmas day 2009 there about an hour and half moved round all the good spots like the Terminal to get me pic taken RNZAF hard stand another pic. then to Aero Club and then out via the Titahi Bay departure.
Blowing 30knots when Landed and gusting 35 to 40plus on Take Off. No sweat for the Jodel.
Airport $40 and Airways $4.30
Great day and thanks to the Airport WN handling Spiro's the Man and all the Team up the Tower.
It was a HOOT.
