Since joining this forum I have been looking through the ol' photo albums. Here is Herc 01 on the tarmac in Vancouver on its way to Cold Lake Alberta for Winter training. The picture is about 7 years old now. The Ski hill you can see in the background is Mt Seymore. The largest of three ski hills that over look the city.

Just trying to think of the name of the exercise they went up there for. They were doing it when I was on the Sqn in 93/94

I've (&^$% figured it out. Much thanks to my programer wife! The crew were real cool as well. Let us climb in for a peek around. Feel sorry for the blokes in back. Just mesh seats. That would make for a long trip from Kiwi land.

Hey, great photo. Thanks for that. It's always interesting to see the places that the No. 40 Squadron Hercs get to around the world.
I have travelled on a Herc from Christchurch to Auckland on the mesh seats. They were not as uncomfortable as they look, and the rhythmic noise of the engines soon puts most people to sleep too.

There is a Maple Flag exercise, but there was another one that we used to go to for training, not a common name like that.

Hope this works, taken about thre weeks ago on MF. 40 Sqn Herc on the ramp at Cold Lake with an F15 taking past, if you look closely you can see its painted in Soviet colours as part of the agressor Sqn.

Very neat photos Rat Fink. I love that second flying one, looking backward out of the astro hatch I guess.
Are you 40 Squadron aircrew?

Ok that is Maple flag, but there was another exercise, more actually a course they used to go to, actually it was in the states, not Canada. A tactical training one. This is going back to the 90's.
Rta Fink, you an aircraft tech on sqn

The Course is called JRTC, or Joint Readiness Training Centre, It is at Little Rock AFB in Arkansas. I am sitting in the NZ Embassy in Washington DC at the moment, and am flying to Little Rock this afternoon to catch the 757 back to NZ that is bringing back all the 40 Sqn pers on the JRTC, as the Herc is full or cargo so cannot bring back all the pers. I do have some "covert" photos (cameras not welcome) from Little Rock AFB, and will post them when I get back. There was only about 70 odd Herc's there when I went thru....
Had a bit of luck on Saturday when I went to the museum at Dulles Airport, there was some sort of USAF Fly in that I did not know about, usual planes were there A10, F16, F15, T38, C17, KC135 and a few old war birds, but to my surprise there was a Marine Corp MV22?? Tilt rotor helicopter/plane, never seen one before, very impressive, as was the museum. Also landed at Andrews AFB, which was full of C17's, numerous helicopters, KC135s, and a ton of USAF Business Jets/trainers, and Air Force 1.
So far it has been a great trip.
