I parked in a CHCH city carpark today and for doing that instead of a Wilsons carpark they seem to have the right to issue tickets for no WOF or Rego. Yes ok, what was I out driving in that situation. Comon we have all been a few days late etc. So does anyone know a good idea that gets you out of these. Any CHCH city councillers on here, this ain't a thread for you.

Obviously you had stopped on the way to the WOF station so that you could renew your rego as you can't get one without the other!

Remember that the offence must be on a public road.
You may drive a vehicle on private land - your driveway, farm or quarry - as much as you like without either a WOF or a rego and you have not committed any offence.
Some years ago I parked my car in the street and went overseas for two weeks. In the time I was away, the rego expired, and I returned to find a council ticket on the car. I was able to prove that the car had not been used on the road between the time of expiry and my return and renewal of the registration. They had to cancel the offence notice.

Depending on where you get your WOF you can do the rego at the same time eg VTNZ or AA so I am afraid they have got you by the short and curlys. Now you have reminded me that my WOF runs out on Friday!!

Id say you have been caught fair and square . Shortys advise might be best , get them both done asap then take proof of this along with your ticket to where you pay and plead for mercy ( under some circumstances they can waive tickets for up to 2 weeks after being issued ) Pointing out that it was actually the law that prevented you getting the rego ( because you cant do that without a wof ) and hope for the best .

Fines are simply 'offers'. An interesting linky - regards Yes, because only the best legal advice comes from youtube (or the 'net in general, for that matter). ;D Beags, while I do sympathise with you to an extent - rego and WoF aren't exactly what you'd call bills that suddenly appear unexpectedly in the mailbox - so maybe take this on the chin and make sure you're on the ball next time. And things could have been worse - imagine if you'd had a collision with another vehicle, and had no current rego or WoF? Don't the NZ Police have Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras deployed yet? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_number_plate_recognitionFrom an ACT perspective, these cameras have removed quite a number of unlicensed drivers and unregistered, defective and/or unisured vehicles off the road - as well as picked up a few people wanted on outstanding arrest warrants over the past three years. In fact, it isn't that odd now to see a vehicle on the side of the road with the number plates removed by the Police after being detected by a RAPID-equipped patrol car - www.police.act.gov.au/media-centre/media-releases/act/2011/july/one-year-on-rapid-racks-up-an-impressive-safety-record

Unfortunate but I have been there done that at sometime in my life. Now I make sure its all up to date and even put it on my calendar with a reminder couple of weeks before due date. Most WOF places will send out a reminder about a month before too. I remember many years ago when I was at work the work place was large and had one or two and a few more minor dings to cars in the car park. Some of the cars were not registered or had no WOF so no insurance. The factory manager announced one morning that he was going to check every vehicle in the car park the next day and if any did not have a current WOF or registration he would phone a tow truck and have them removed at the owners expense as it was illegal to drive them on the road. There were quite a few empty spaces in the car park the next day! ;D Keep in mind there are changes coming to the WOF system and although it mentions early 2014 in this link it is actually being introduced this year in October. www.nzta.govt.nz/about/media/releases/2455/news.htmlCheers, Colin

Pretty sure I heard that it had been changed to happen in June.
Yes I am totally guilty here in the fact that I have not had a current WOF or rego for the past 11 months. my fault of course for not getting it done. There is a garage next door to the bakery that gives us discount, but I do check out the fromt door nearly every day and there is always a que.
Just looks like I will be doing some extra overtime in the next month. Only just finished paying off my speeding fine from last year. I will learn the hard way.

If you don't mind me asking, how much do they sting you for not having rego and WoF over there? And just to let you know how good you have it over there as far as rego is concerned............. www.rego.act.gov.au/assets/PDFs/1Private%20PCV%20registration%20fees%20no%20ITCE.pdf

ACT 3rd party insurance is expensive at almost $580 per year All because the ACT Government signed a contract with the NRMA to be the sole provider of compulsory third party injury insurance for motorists in the ACT. And they keep telling us we're getting a great deal.........
