Two Air Force Iroquois helicopters, army Unimogs and quad bikes have been distributing food parcels and drinking water supplies to isolated communities. About 160 people remain homeless – mainly in Kaeo and Kaitaia. Local Civil Defence Controller for the Far North, Alistair Wells, says he will be concentrating on getting more roads open. Work on re-establishing electricity to storm-battered areas from the Coromandel Peninsula to the Far North is continuing, but almost 2000 consumers are still blacked out. Powerco says many in the Coromandel may not be reconnected for up to one-and-a-half days. While the worst of the weather is over for now, the MetService is concerned about another low pressure system coming up on the radar. Forecaster Jo Goudie says they are waiting to see how it develops over the weekend.
