So we had to hold prior to landing at Auckland on the 20th. TAIC site shows a "current investigation" into an A340 runway excursion on the 19th.
Wonder who that was?

This mornings NZ Herald says it was a LAN Chile A340 on take-off for Sydney. Apparently it landed safely in Sydney but with tyre damage.

Despite the assertions to the contrary of an aviation "expert" in the Herald, a quick Internet search will reveal that mistaking runway edge lights for centreline lighting is an occurrence happening with reasonable frequency. I have seen photos comparing what a pilots would see if lined up over the edge rather than centreline lighting at some airports and its scarily easy to do!
