Can't agree with you Dave on Chinese not being able to make good pies. The Breadwinner Bakery in St.Heliers, run by chinese, make the best steak pie i have ever had. Also the Glen Innes Bakery make the best Smoked Fish pie. Also run by Chinese. Yum.

I did say 'most' Shamus. A few certainly do get it right.
Beags, was that the Ventura Cafe? That place had great food. It's still there and I'm told still has the wartime RNZAF photos on the wall but is now under a different name.

The worst pie I ever had was at Ferrymead museum in 2004. I think they sold Dad and I some of their historical exhibits. I tried but simply couldn't eat it, so both went in the bin.

Jimmy's pies are made in Roxburgh, just a little family owned pie factory. In the TV3 clip, it showed them being made. The used to be in a foil tray.

Just talking to my father in Dunedin and he reckons McGregors now bake their salmonella surprises in Wanaka and that the tea rooms of the same name are still on the main drag in Palmerston.
But, yeah; Jimmys are a bit special.... or they were some years ago when we lived in Otago. Didn't find a decent pie in Canterbury in the seven years I lived there, but the Sydenham Bakery offerings were OK, as were Netherby Bakery offerings in Ashburton.
We used to enjoy the Maketu family pies when we lived in Gisborne, Dave... ;-)

The Maketu pies can be good or very bad, depending on what the dairy owner does with them after they get them out of the freezer. Usually they're yuck.
There was at least one great pie maker in Christchurch when I lived at Wigram, Cpl Doug Hilliard used to bring several bakers trays of pies to work every second morning or so, from his sister's nearby bakery, and sell them to people in PTS and Tech Sqn. They were really, really good. I cannot recall the name of the bakery. it wasn't too far from the base.
