The pub at Millers Flat, Central Otago, is now serving deep fried kiwi mince pies. Sounds awesome! I wonder if they will get the Heart Attack Tick.

Is the mince deep fried, or the whole pie?!

The whole pie.
The publican microwaves it to heat the middle, then deep fries it. It was on 3 News.

Jimmys pies, best in the south as well. Keeps you going from one airport to the next.

The food nazi's are going to love this.I wonder how the calorie content measures up against the double down zinger burger I had today (with fries and potatoe n gravy).

Oh, how we miss Jimmys Pies.....
That said, at least the Australians can make a reasonable maggot pack; the Poms, god bless their little cotton socks, have no bloody idea!!

I have never had a Jimmy's Pie. The best I have had in the South Island were Renwick pies, and vey close second were Doughboys at Tekapo.

How come they have an average pie in WA, Mrs Mac's, that is the import of choice for NZ.
Has anyone else noted those Perth pies for sale about this country ?
I cannot recall seeing Jimmy's or Big Ben but a real southern man swears by Fishers black pudding. Cheers Phil !! Peter Timbs in ChCh do a reasonable black pudding also.

The best pies I had were from the Hororata pub and man were they good. Unfortunately they don't do them any more.

MacGregors mutton pies used to be famous in the south, but I have a feeling that they've gone now? They used to be in the Main Street in Palmerston...

Mc Gregors pies are still there, well the shop is, but the manufacturing side of things has gone to Jimmys Pies. The place for greasy mutton pies was a wee bakery in Hillside Rd in Dunedin. Was quite famous. Name is on the tip of my tongue.

Are these Jimmy's pies mass produced factory pies like Big Bens and Four and Twenty pies? Or are they handcrafted "home made" type pies?
I grew up hearing from Dad (who was a meat pie connoisseur) just how bad Four and Twenty pies were, and that he reckoned they used real blackbirds in them. I'd never had one though till I got to Blenheim, and I found then rather good tucker, much in the vein of Big Bens only bigger. Dad hated Big Bens too.
When we were kids Dad used to take us every Saturday to different pie shops in Hamilton and other places to sample and critique, and if we liked them we might go back again, r might move on to sample others. This was back in the 1970's and 80's when you could get good homemade pies even in dairies - now most dairies stock crap like Maketu pies and Mrs Macs crap as well as Big Bens; and the bakeries are almost all Chinese owned now and most cannot make decent pies to save themselves. I think Dad's fascination with testing pies was because my Nana, his mum, had run a famous bakery in Cambridge called Peter Pan's Kitchen which was renowned for its pies - people sometimes still mention them today if I mention her name! - and I think Dad was looking to measure up to her's. The shops he found that were the best were in Tauranga and Hawera, and I kid you not Mum and Dad would go for a drive back then just to get a good pie - seeing the sites etc was secondary!
Luckily my favourite pies are right here in Cambridge and made by Ma Bakers. Recently the longtime kiwi family owned bakery sold out to Asian immigrants but they have thankfully not done what most do whenn they take over a bakery (cut their costs and fiull the pies with leeks, gristle and other crap. Instead the new people have retained the ever popular recipes. In fact they ahve added some new prroducts and it's actually better than it was.
