And I hope the remainder of the pictures will show up at some time ...!? 4 hours later - Yes, they did.

I've made considerable progress on this build and have a ways to go yet. All the gruesome details of painting and applying decals are on www.kiwimodeller.com/index.php/forum/68-rnzaf-75th-anniversary/28247-rnzaf-kittyhawk-mk-iii-nz3072-1-32-hasegawaso I won't repeat them all here. Suffice to say a great deal of research, interpretation, brush painting and decal application has occurred. I first applied the Hasegawa kitset white stripes, serials, black code numbers and 2 x 'U' Sky Grey code letters from 1/48 CA Hudson, then, after cutting down the white bars on Ventura's 3276 roundel-bars to reduce their size I added them to arrive at the first 'finished' stage - 32nd NZ3072 BUILD 10 008 (Medium) by Wally Hicks, on Flickr The obvious issues are 1) Roundel colour and 2) White density and the stripes showing through the bars. Next I applied the kitset roundels over the top of the Ventura ones (and added an Aeromaster 1/48 Avenger blue dot to the centre of the fuselage roundels) - 32nd NZ3072 BUILD 11 001 (Medium) by Wally Hicks, on Flickr The white density issue remains so I freehand brush painted over the white bars which, after all, were added much later (Nov '43) than the stripes (unless the stripes were repainted) - 32nd NZ3072 BUILD 11 015 (Medium) by Wally Hicks, on Flickr The challenge now becomes fading and weathering the roundels so they don't look too fresh. Here's the underside (with some repair damage to come on the port Hasegawa roundel which split in half) - 32nd NZ3072 BUILD 11 018 (Medium) by Wally Hicks, on Flickr Another update soon. Cheers, Wally.

What a joy to behold, Wally!
You've achieved a nice balance. Top marks and an extra choccy cake ration, that man, for the roundels. :-)
If you have any blackboard chalks laying around use the light green and blue shades. Grate some over 320 grit into a small dish then dab away with a stiff brush, over a matt coat. A combination of patting and swiping traces of chalk dust will give you the weathering you're after on the roundel blue.
Maybe some tan or red chalk dust on the OD, p'raps? Merely a thought thingy.
I love my pastel chalks!
Well done on the commission. They're especially rewarding when your client is all smiles. :-)
Regards
Ross

Thanks Ross. Chalk pastels eh? I have some of those. I will give it a go on the upper wing and fuselage roundels between 2 top matt coats. If I can get the hang of weathering roundels it will lift my model making to a new level I reckon. Cheers, Wally.

Get an airbrush, they do a better job than pastels in my opinion. You can recreate some very subtle weathering with an airbrush.

Is that a massive tin of Kauri tobacco in your avatar, Wally?

Yeah ... but brush painting is the part I most enjoy about building a model and it's sort of my "point of difference" if you know what I mean. My new avatar is me with a 2.45:1 scale Kauri tobacco tin carved from Kauri wood and brush painted.

Coded "19". To No.14 Squadron. Ferried to Espiritu Santo in April 1943. Named "WAIRARAPA WILDCAT". To No.16 Squadron. Damaged when collided with water tanker while landing at Segi on 31 August 1943. Sergeant M. Willis suffered minor injuries. To No.4 OTU, Ardmore. Mid air collision with NZ3112 during low level formation flying over Papakura on 05 June 1944. Sergeant H. Walker was able to retain control of the aircraft and land safely back at Ardmore. To No.4 OTU, Ohakea by September 1944. Sold to J. Larsen from Rukuhia on 02 March 1948. And here are some pictures of my finished 1/32 model of the aircraft in late November 1943, depicted as a battle weary and heavily weathered old warrior but still going strong, having scored another kill, the aircraft's 6th [as I recall] a few days before on 17 November - CA HUDSON Build 2, 32nd NZ3072 FINv1 015 (Medium) by Wally Hicks, on Flickr CA HUDSON Build 2, 32nd NZ3072 FINv1 018 (Medium) by Wally Hicks, on Flickr CA HUDSON Build 2, 32nd NZ3072 FINv1 021 (Medium) by Wally Hicks, on Flickr CA HUDSON Build 2, 32nd NZ3072 FINv1 023 (Medium) by Wally Hicks, on Flickr CA HUDSON Build 2, 32nd NZ3072 FINv1 028 (Medium) by Wally Hicks, on Flickr CA HUDSON Build 2, 32nd NZ3072 FINv1 022 (Medium) by Wally Hicks, on Flickr CA HUDSON Build 2, 32nd NZ3072 FINv1 035 (Medium) by Wally Hicks, on Flickr CA HUDSON Build 2, 32nd NZ3072 FINv1 032 (Medium) by Wally Hicks, on Flickr There are more photos on Flickr and www.kiwimodeller.com in Aviation Showcase. 1/32 Hasegawa P-40M kitset, RB Prods seatbelts, Eduard Masks, some scratchbuilt details, Ventura 3276 decals plus kit decals.
