Royal New Zealand Air Force personnel from Base Auckland in Whenuapai are busy hunting submarines on an exercise in South Korea and checking out the capabilities of their upgraded P-3K2 Orion aircraft. The 5 Squadron detachment was welcomed to Pohang (one of Auckland’s sister cities) by members of the South Korean Navy’s Air Wing 6 last week for Exercise ROKKIWI, a biennial anti-submarine warfare (ASW) exercise hosted by the South Korean Navy. The Orion has carried out a number of flights over the Sea of Japan, off the east coast of South Korea, practising tactical level cooperation and coordination with defence partners. On this occasion United States Navy P-3Cs from the 7th Fleet, based in Japan, are also participating. The detachment commander, Wing Commander Aaron Benton, says that the upgraded aircraft is performing well. "This is the first exercise with the upgraded P-3K2 deployed. As the South Korean Navy has submarines, this is a fantastic chance to test our anti-submarine warfare capabilities. "South Korea is also upgrading its P-3 fleet so we are able to create synergies and learn from each other as to what things work and what don't. "Working with another nation that also has P-3s gives us the opportunity to coordinate activities with more aircraft," he said. Off-duty, the detachment has been touring Pohang and meeting locals. They have also hosted the Mayor of Pohang and taken him for a flight in the Orion. www.nzdf.mil.nz/news/media-releases/2013/20130627rapwisk.htm

Further From Home Than Usual For Manawatu Man 5 July 2013 “What an amazing country and culture!” That was Air Force Corporal John Maiava’s first reaction to South Korea on arrival as part of Exercise ROKKIWI. Exercise ROKKIWI is a biennial exercise held in the Republic of Korea. During the exercise, a P-3K2 Orion from No 5 Squadron of the Royal New Zealand Air Force conducted a number of flights off the east coast of South Korea, providing the opportunity to work alongside the Republic of Korea Navy in combined anti-submarine warfare operations. The exercise included involvement from United States Navy P-3Cs from the 7th Fleet, based in Japan. The last time New Zealand was involved in an exercise with ROK was in 2009. This is not the first deployment for CPL Maiava, and it never gets old for him. “Deploying is what we are trained to do; it’s what we sign up for. As we are a maritime force element, most of our deployments are in the Pacific. It was a good experience to go somewhere a bit further from home this time.” CPL Maiava, originally from Palmerston North, joined the RNZAF in 2008 as an Air Warfare Specialist on the Orion. His role on the aircraft is to operate the sensor systems such as the radar, electro-optics and acoustics. When he is not flying, CPL Maiava enjoys sport, particularly soccer and touch. “I love sport and I love to travel. I’m really lucky that the RNZAF is an organisation that pays and encourages me to do these things.” The Orion is now on its way home and is due back in New Zealand next week. www.nzdf.mil.nz/nr/exeres/ff016f1b-d0a8-46fb-8c9e-6cfb0d1b6914,frameless.htm@nrmode=published.htm

US, S. Korea, New Zealand hold antisubmarine exercise June 27, 2013 SEOUL — The U.S., New Zealand and South Korea are conducting a joint antisubmarine exercise using maritime patrol aircraft to commemorate the end of the Korean War 60 years ago. The exercise, which began June 20 and will end Saturday, is intended to promote military exchanges and friendly relations among the participating countries, according to a statement from the South Korean Navy’s Air Wing 6, which is supervising it. The training includes maritime patrol aircraft searching for and pursuing submarines in the East Sea. It also includes offensive/defensive submarine battle tactics. Two symposiums are being held in conjunction with the exercise, during which the participants from the three countries will exchange information about P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft. This is the fifth time New Zealand and South Korea have held this type exercise since 1997, and it is the first time the U.S. has participated. www.stripes.com/news/pacific/us-s-korea-new-zealand-hold-antisubmarine-exercise-1.227810Anyone get any pics of the US Navy Orion that been based out of whenuapai this week? www.mrcaviation.blogspot.co.nz/2013/07/poseidons-spear.htmlwww.mrcaviation.blogspot.co.nz/2013/07/united-states-navy-orion.html
