Well, in a very self involved way, Id like to announce Im presently on holiday, enjoying the delights of family time in sunny Orewa. I intend to go down to NS airfield and have a nosey around, along with ardmore given the chance. Anyone have any other ideas where I can take the kids apart from the zoo...etc etc etc...and is there anything interesting aviation wise happening before sunday the 7th? (when I leave the family here to avoid the lovely summer in the M/E and head back to work) Ta!

Snow Planet is not far from Orewa plus some good walks at Army bay area you can even see where they tried to develop Tsunami bombs plus some pill boxes. North head in devonport has some excellent fortifications and there is the Navel museum there as well. Give Don Subritzy? a call he is near dairy flat and may be able to show you his collection. If you are into walks catch the ferry to Rangitoto Island (devonport?) and stroll up to the top and back get an early ferry though, plus if you are into vineyards a trip to Waiheke Island is good as well.

If you haven't been to Motat in the last couple of years then it is a definite. Wednesday is the pick for a week day tour as that is when the volunteers are there. There is a lot going on at the moment. Failing that then Sunday as that is when the weekend volunteers are there. Also next to Snow planet is go karts. Just don't break a leg.

Thanks so far for the ideas, sadly the last couple of days have involved buckets and Panadol as I've played nursemaid to 2 sick kids and a sick wife. Hopefully tomorrow will bring health and happiness so that I can enjoy a few things before having to head back off to work at the weekend.

Lots to see and do around here.
To help sick children recover, try dizzy lizzies ice cream parlour next to the silverdale wharehouse or the movies at whangaparoa. They might like the factory outlet shops at silverdale or the billabong factory shop in Albany. Hobby city in Albany depending on whether they like that sort of thing. The Plantation at the southern end of the beach is always good for a burger etc. once everyone's better, hire a bike in Orewa and ride around the estuary on the bike trail. The hot pools and slides at waiwera are alway fun for kids.
For your military fix, just take a walk along Orewa beach and see if you can spot the 5 pill boxes scattered around. A wander around Shakespeare park at the end of whangaparoa is interesting, including a good view of the navy camp. Heading down to devonport (Mt Victoria, North Head, naval museum), Narrow Neck and Castor Bay battery are all good places to visit for those who like coastal defence sites.
I think other have covered most of the aviation stuff, but don't forget the Auckland War Memorial museum with the spitfire and zero. If you go out to Ardmore, check out the Warbirds hangar and get a good look at the A4.
Enjoy!
