Yep, I'm a fan but ya just have to look beyond all the crap that goes on etc and watch the actual racing.

Yep. The Italians boycotted the first race over the protest hearing before the International Jury not being held prior to the startof racing. Italians said it was a matter of principle. Kiwis admire themfor it, but they said the 1 point was more important to them because it might turn out to be very important later. Easy point.

Yep, I'm a big fan too, pity about the legal turmoil but hopefully when they all join the party the racings going to be awesome. 42kts is insane speed!! One thing I think would be better is if the races, which are traditionally 2-3hrs long, are now only taking 30-40mins, then they should race each other 3 times each day to get the point. Best of 3.

I think when they get into the finals of the Louis Vitton and the actual Americas Cup, you will find they will be doing 2 races per day.

Two races, two wins and again they didn't have an opponent. The opposition didn't have their second boat ready in time.

looks like another 2 weeks for Armetus to have theirs ready and apparantely if the ruling goes the way of the Kiwis / italians then their boat will not be legal.
Watching them jive while foiling is just unbelievable. That vertical wing must be secured pretty bloody good.

Is this actually being screened on TV live in NZ? I haven't seen anything, thankfully.
Also is that guy Stephen Barclay, the America's Cup CEO, a kiwi? He sounds like one.

This is the editoral in today's Dompost, a view with which I totally agree! Racing alone epitomises what a complete and utter farce this event has become!
"As a visual metaphor for the 34th sailing of the America's Cup, it's hard to beat the sight of Team New Zealand streaking across San Francisco Bay in the first race of the challenger series on Monday. With both hulls out of the water and hitting speeds of 40 knots, the catamaran was the very epitome of cup holder Oracle's dream for the regatta – sleek, cool and exciting.
There was just one problem. Team New Zealand was sailing in splendid isolation. Of the two other challengers for sport's oldest trophy, one – Swedish syndicate Artemis – is still racing against time to get a replacement boat in the water after wrecking its first in the crash that claimed crewman Andrew Simpson's life, and the other – Italian syndicate Luna Rossa – was sulking in the docks because its appeal against last-minute rule changes had yet to be heard.
After 162 years of dirty tricks on the water and legal skulduggery off it, the current holders of the cup appear to have hit upon the perfect formula to retain the trophy. They have made the event so expensive and so technically challenging that hardly anyone has the money or the expertise to design, build and sail the 72-foot vessels in which this year's event is being contested.
Emirates Team New Zealand is only in San Francisco courtesy of $36 million of Government funding.
In the event of the team overcoming the obstacles before it, both on and off the water, it will be money well spent. The economic benefits of bringing the cup back to Auckland would be huge, but the last government which approved the funding might as well have walked into a casino and put the money on black.
The investment in the campaign is a gamble pure and simple. Win and the rewards are immense. Lose and the country gets nothing except an over-hyped opportunity to market New Zealand at an event few in the United States know or care is occurring.
Almost since its inception, the America's Cup has been a rich man's indulgence, a way for the obscenely wealthy to butt heads without getting the bumps and bruises that come on the football field.
In the early years of the cup, the captains of US and British industry competed with each other to see who could fund the biggest folly. More recently, the cup has become the plaything of US software billionaires and European fashion and pharmaceutical houses. The Government does not belong in that company.
When it comes to the cup, New Zealand sailors and designers have proven themselves to be among the best in the world. They rightly deserve acclaim for their achievements.
But the Government should not be funding their participation in a rich man's sport. If New Zealand's yachties want to compete in a billionaire's playground, they need to find other sources of income which, as the sponsors' names emblazoned on their wing sail show, they have had considerable success in doing.
The Government should reserve taxpayers' cash for things that matter ordinary New Zealanders.

....and....as an afterthought, it is totally beyond me hop any vessel can hit 40 knots when the wind is a mere 16!

Just one point Beags, the term is "gybing" (or if you are American "jibing") where you do a down wind turn and the boom swings across, usually with quite a force.
