I have just returned from hibernation and am still catching up on things.
I seemed to have spent much time in the past weeks checking out all the various airline websites for specific airfares. I have a feeling many of the members here like to keep tabs on any real 'specials' going.
I have used $5 tickets between Jakarta and Singapore in the past. I have regularly flown Bali to Darwin for $26 (USD).
These tickets are there.... and often most of the time. You look at those sites like Webjet and eDreams and they always seem to be double what you expect and know you can do it for.
I always have in mind 'target' fares. ie you would expect $200 or less to cross the ditch. $400 to Darwin etc.
I remember posting here sometime back when Air Asia were doing Christchurch to Kuala Lumpur for about $200 each way.
I would love to see a thread whereby someone could inform the others of some really good deals up for grabs. Even methods of obtaining a deal.
I asked about my mates and got told how to travel from ChCh to Napier for a little over $50 for example. My $65 ticket (with baggage) got me a seat in Operation BRA..... I didn't hesitate to get up to Hawkes Bay and do my dealing.
If anyone knew of any good airfares going I sure would like to hear about them.
I think the Perth based guys would love to hear of anything going as well. I have flown internationally via Singapore rather than consider the domestic fares, Darwin to Perth.
I am sure you can still get up into Asia for a little over $400 just by keeping an eye on NZ-East Coast- KL or Singapore flight specials circulating about.

We've just booked our Bali holiday (cant live in W.A and NOT go to Bali!) and got our flight home for $67 each, but its with Jetstar, which is possibly the better of the 2nd tier group of carriers. As it was our first holiday booking we went thru travel agent, but as we get more confident we'll shop online in the future. I noticed Qantas will be starting up Perth-Auckland direct, which will give ANZ a shakeup (hopefully) and I can get my airpoints too (more importantly!). Coinidentally we got our whole holiday package for about 30% less than just flights back home for Xmas. But...as you well know....ya get what ya pay for!

Hi Jonesy. Yep, Perth is a great launchpad for many of those trips. There is certainly much competition but as you say you have to expect what you pay for. Everytime I fly Tiger I vow never again...
I actually had to use them last Friday to get into Singapore, they were much cheaper than Vietnam Airlines and I was limited with choice. A little over $130 from Hanoi I think. I was hoping to get over to Dien Bien Phu but basically ran out of time. I guess I will try and get a few more of those places in next trip. Mel Gibson's Ia Drang Valley of We Were Soldiers could be added to the list as well I guess.
Perth to Singapore is an easy route. Once in Singapore then flights out are cheap. I watched the Bledisloe in Harry's Bar at $12 a beer.. ouch. The two full (genuine) steins at $4 each of just two nights earlier was a distant memory.
At those Singapore prices it is often a good excuse to go somewhere a little cheaper for a beer. The ferry over to Batam (Indonesia) takes less than an hour.
I have flown from Bali, or Jakarta, to Batam, stayed the night and then crossed on the ferry to fly out.

Yeah I am looking at taking the mrs to Singapore early next year. Not sure if it will be cheaper to go direct out of here with Singapore Airlines or go via jetstar to brisbane and hope to catch a cheapie outta there or even darwin.

Darwin will not be cheaper. It is out of the way on many respects. Gold Coast is a good choice as you often get specials out of there these days. Previously I had just looked at Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane for connection upwards. Getting to any Aussie East Coast port is easy and often you can save a few dollars there also. I would be very wary of Tiger and their timekeeping. You definitely don't want any tight connections with them. For a holiday I have flown into Bali, tripped up through the main islands of Indonesia and then gone across on one of the ferries to Singapore from Batam. www.singaporecruise.com.sg/index.php/leaving-singapore/ferry/ferry-operators/

If you're off to Singapore may I put in a plug for either the Orchard Mandarin or the Furama Riverfront hotels. We were in Singapore twice last year and stayed at these and were thoroughly satisfied. The Orchard Mandarin is quite flash to be honest but the travel agent twiddled some knobs or used some other jiggery-pokery and got us a good deal. The breakfast buffet was bloody fantastic as well which never hurts. The Furama is a small step down but still damn nice. Both are good and central too. Never flown them but heard some classics. Can you still smoke on them? I'd imagine you might as the Ruskies would probably have a major riot if they couldn't spark up on a flight.

(cant live in W.A and NOT go to Bali!) In the 20+ years I lived there (born and partly bred!), I managed not to! LOL. Mind you, a good chunk of that time was spent in the south-west and I didn't emerge too often other than to hit the Pilbara and Kimberleys to see my sister. That part of the world has to be driven - it's sensational (mind you, most of WA is). Flying there, for example Broome, is more expensive than flying to Bali so... Safe travels, Jonesy.

Good luck Beagle. I hate to think. I have stayed at 60 Joo Chiat Road which is near Paya Lebar MRT station. It used to be $50 per night but I have been charged $85 this trip. newgatewayhotel.com/about.phpIt also has the advantage of being just metres from a really good and not-so-pricey restaurant. www.ms-skinnyfat.com/2012/09/vietnamese-restaurant-long-phung.htmlI paid $12 a beer down at the Boat Quay in the tourist area of town. It is tough trying to find Asian prices in that place.
