Hi, working at Shands Rd Hornby today, A ANZ 747 was beating the circuit for quite a while, was just to far away to get photos, looked impressive doing low circuits with all the draggy bits hanging out. Any one else spy it and get some photos as you don't see this very often.

The classics used to do circuits at AA back in the 90's. I wonder if its a cheaper option for pilots gone uncurrent ie 3 take offs and 3 landings-than a sim..or maybe the sim has blown a foo-foo valve or something

Cheaper in the Sim of course but some authorities still require base training in the aircraft itself.

I understand that a group of Japanese pilots were flying the required circuits in the real aircraft as they neared the end of their type rating training. A similar thing has been done in years past in the Air NZ B767 also for overseas airlines.

Wonder how long a set of tyres last doing circuits like this?

Cheaper in the Sim of course but some authorities still require base training in the aircraft itself. And long may that continue! I 'm sure the bean counters loathe it, but I hate the idea that a guys first flight in the actual jet is with 300-400 unknowing punters in the back! Maybe I'm just getting old ....

It's the way of the future I'm afraid. My first flights in the -400 and 330 were revenue flights full of punters.
You're right - the bean counters love it.

Simulators are very good these days so an airline doesn't have to waste $$$ on circuits. It's not as though your first sector is entirely by yourself - some airlines it's six sectors with a training captain then a check to the line.

AirNZ has 9 sector line training for its Second Officers after type rating.
