Old snap taken in 1968 +/-... A girlfriend at the time and I were trying to get to Mt Hutt and had missed the bus or something and her girlfriend came with her boyfriend to look for us along the road...after finding us and landing on the road it had to be pushed into the verge to let some traffic pass before we took off... Just wonder if anyone can recognise it - the owner was quite a character and well known in the area from memory...

Back in the good old days when someone could get away with a stunt like that and wouldn't even make the papers

Thanks for all the replies...much appreciated guys! Does look like it was AYU. Cederman rings a bell - Harry I think . It was the first and only time I've flown an Auster.

The owners of ZK-AYU before Harry Cederman up to October 1968 were the Kea Syndicate, Queenstown. More of a possibility. A girlfriend at the time and I . . . her girlfriend came with her boyfriend So who got left behind? (Hint: 4 people - Aiglet is a 3-seater)

Ian said... One of my few times in an Auster was in early '70 in this one when 'hitch hiking' up to Hanmer Springs with my then girlfriend who knew the owners girlfriend etc etc...anyway a phone call had him landing a on stretch of road and picking us up with a "you fly us back"...even though I had plenty of 180/185 and Cub time I still made an absolute prat of myself :-) 14 August 2011 02:26

Hi there ChinaPilot, I was talking with my brother Charlie (current owner of ZK-AYU) this morning telling him about this thread. He asked me tell you that if ever you are in Canterbury give him a call and he would like to take you for a fly in the same old girl. Feel free to make contact here: and I'll send you his contact details. .

Hi All, just a correction to Baz62s post above, shes owned by my brother "Charlie Draper".
Yeah I thought it didn't sound right! Anthony and I met Charlie and had a couple of drinks a few years ago after admiring his Auster (well two Austers!) and Paul Morrison who rebuilt AYU was there with his J5G as well.

The photograph of the Mystery Auster ZK AYU was possibly owned by Peter Rowley of Auster airservices which was operating around the South Canterbury area during the 1960s. My father ,Harry Cederman, was a shareholder and aircraft engineer at Aerotech , Timaru. Aerotech was responsible for looking after over 110 aircraft, 70 of them were privately owned. I seem to remember that Peter was quite a character and would often park his plane on the road at Ranfurly. It would seem quite likely that Peter was the mystery pilot.
