Oh no, don't tell me you're having to sell your Mustang to fund the Auster?

What Mustang is this - didn't know of any Mustangs under restoration in NZ ...or is it overseas somewhere?

Yes it's overseas. And understandably the owner doesn't want it widely advertised, too many tire kickers and Data plate hounds clogging up the airwaves when he only wants serious buyers contacting him, hence why Anthony is acting as a filter.

I guess if anyone was to attempt to restore a Mustang project to flight in New Zealand, it would probably cost more than simply buying an existing flying example. Would I be right?

I think most of us fall into that category unfortunately.

I would say you are correct Dave as with the costs of rebuilding a Mustang (or a Spitfire) are actually well known that expertise doesn't come cheap. It might be cheaper perhaps if you have a completer aircraft already but in a lot of cases you need to manufacture a lot of parts and structure not available and then there's buying the parts you need, overhauling them etc etc. There may be a difference in price between an aircraft that may have just come out of a total rebuild, one that's been flown for years and one thats been flown very little and is in need of an inspection to return to the air. Then there might be one with an engine and prop overhaul due, the list goes on. Like many of us if you can do a lot of the work yourself you will save a lot of money but not many of us have the skills necessary and I don't have all of them but that's a plus for me as I want to learn some of the "old" skills like fabric work for example. Really though you need to have the money as once she's flying there's the costs of insuring and operating this type of aircraft.

Looks like a day or three after she "beached" ... front canopy piece by tip of R wing, no slide/skid marks in the sand, the tide might have been over it a few times as she has "settled" in a lower position in the sand, forming a washout around the fuse. Three women on the right wing, plus guy with shorts reaching into cockpit. Two kids out front. Seems like the pilot had a "safe" landing.
