Sad news Pilot dies in helicopter crashUPDATED 11:10 Published: 10:30AM Wednesday December 11, 2013 Source: ONE News A pilot has died after a helicopter crashed in rough terrain in North Canterbury this morning. Police have confirmed that the pilot, who was the sole occupant of the Robinson R22 helicopter at the time of the crash, has died. The crash occurred just before 9.30am near Domett, south of Cheviot. The helicopter had been spraying in the area, and the incident was called in to emergency services by the loader driver. The pilot was pronounced dead by ambulance staff at the scene. No details of the deceased are available at this stage. Emergency services are at the scene where efforts are still underway to bring a small grass fire under control. The scene of the accident is in rough country which is accessible only by four wheel drive. The Civil Aviation Authority has been notified of the crash. Email this article Print this article

Formal identification is not yet complete, but Police believe he was David Stanley Jones, aged 48, of Woodend. Mr Jones was the pilot and sole occupant of a Robinson R22 helicopter, operated by HeliMax, the Woodend-based company he owned. Senior Sergeant Malcolm Johnston says the crash occurred near the base of Mt Percy, inland from Domett, shortly before 9.30 this morning. "Our enquiries indicate that the helicopter had been spraying matagouri at low altitude in a valley on the western side of Mt Percy when the crash occurred. "It was a high impact crash and the helicopter burst into flames on impact. It is likely the pilot would have been killed instantly." The body of the deceased is expected to be removed from the scene later today. The wreckage of the helicopter will remain at the site pending investigation by the Civil Aviation Authority. Jones was married and had teenage children. He used to be a sheep and beef farmer in Southland.
