Merry Xmas, guys and a happy new year!!
OK, you may remember me telling you that I caught my father happily cutting the buttons off his tunic jackets many years ago before disposing of the jacket?1 Well, long story short, he has sent the buttons to me - arrived XmaS eve - so I can now put the jacket back together again as he also found the wings that he'd gaily removed!
Who do I get to make up the ribbon bar? He has the 5 normal decorations so there's nothing tricky about it; I just don't know who to contact to get a ribbon bar made up as I intend to put the jacket behind glass and on the wall beside his pilots notes made while training.
I can sew the wings on with the padding, and re-attach the buttons after cleaning, polishing and lacquering them; a little help would be appreciated, lads!!

What a great present, good luck on the project.
Ribbon bars are easy to make as they were usually mounted on stiff card or something similar, just make sure you use original ribbon and not the modern nylon substitute currently being used by medal mounters.

Ah, Ok... trouble is getting the ribbons? While it is probably well within my capabilities, I think I'd rather have someone do a 'proper' job, and besides, I'm not sure where I should go to get the ribbons...

You could simply approach the NZDF edals office, I wanted to remount my grandfathers medals and they sent me a couple of feet of each ribbon type.

OK, gang... next question! I have two sets of metal buttons that are identical except that one set has split rings on the mounting; which set is correct for the tunic?
Asan update, I've contacted NZDF and expect to hear from them sometime in the New Year. What's wrong with the modern nylon ribbons??
I'm looking forward to putting this together, actually; oh...is there a proscribed distance between wings - ribbon bar - top of the pocket??

The buttons fitted with split rings were for the KD summer tunic.
Nothing wrong with nylon ribbons but if you want to keep the authentic feel to the tunic wartime (or immediate post war) period ribbons should really be used. As previously stated original period ribbon can be found on internet sales sites.
And yes, just on the top of the pocket!!

OK.... hunting and pecking around the interwebs for information on sizes, spacing etc. for the ribbon bar has achieved precisely nothing. Does anyone have empirical data for this, please??

Hi There I get all my high end collection medals and ribbon bars made at www.nzmedals.com by Aubrey. Have used him for years. He has most common ribbon in original silk weave, perfect for making ribbon bars up from. Let him know what your making up and he's pretty good. I'm not connected to him other than a long term customer. Much quicker and easier than trying to do yourself. Nothing worse to look at than a shoddy ribbon bar or crappy medal mounting job. Post a photo of your finished tunic once its finished! Out

Job's done and I can wholeheartedly recommend Aubrey Bairstow at NZ Medals; great communication and very reasonable price... and here they are! I've gotta move the wings up a touch as they were sewn on in the expectation that the ribbon bar would be 1 line; however, Aubrey told me otherwise and here we go...
