Great to see some pics gebbw, would have been pushing the camera limits by that time. Does anybody know where this a/c is parked up and when it's heading out?. Thinking of heading out for a drive..... From the link I gave above (story updated last night)

Air NZ is the lead customer for it (when they have finished using this particular airframe for testing, Air NZ will get it), and it's the first time this version has been in NZ (I'm not sure if a 787-9 has been outside North America to date?). There are few new airliner types available to get excited about, and you don't often see airliners in manufacturer's colours.

You should be able to find its parking spot easy enough - just follow the electrical smoke

What's so flash about this plane? Also, this particular aircraft is special for me, as I believe it is destined to join the Air NZ fleet later this year. Personally I think the -9 is much more sleeker than the -8 which looks fat and stubby. The Air NZ 787 fleet will be using the old DC-8 rego's! Cool! George Airliner nut.

She's as flash as a rat with a gold tooth Much to be excited about - the 789 will be a fantastic addition to the ANZ fleet & it has been a long time coming. Really looking forward to my first flight on one, no doubt PER-AKL or PER-CHC I think next stop is Ayers Rock for some hot weather testing but its only 37 today & 34 forecast for tomorrow. Look forward to seeing more photos hopefully lads.

Sure will be a great replacement for the 767's. Very quiet on take off this morning just before 11:00. Air New Zealand are getting 10 of them. Registered N789FT while testing it will become ZK-NZD on delivery. Cheers, Colin

So is this plane smaller than a Boeing 777 (which replaced the Boeing 747-400)?

The Boeing 777 300ER is replacing the Boeing 747 400. The 787 will replace the 767

Yeah but is the 787 a medium sized airliner like the 767, or a whoppa like the 777 and 747?

the -9 is pretty much the same size as a A330 200….just a bit smaller than a 777 200….so it is pretty big

Speaking of size, comparing my models of a 787- 8 to a DC-10, they are surprisingly very similar in size, especially the fuselage width. The wing span on the 787 is much larger though. OK, so this is an increase in capacity for the airline then.

This shot may help give you an idea of size. I note Air New Zealand will configure them to carry 302 passengers. They are longer range and slightly bigger than the 787-8. Some of the routes flown by the 777-200 will be replaced with the 787-9. Just to confuse you more Dave there is a 787-X a longer again version due out in the future as well. Cheers, Colin

Up until recently the 747 -400 and -SP were my favorite looking (large) aircraft... Since China Southern's 787 has been coming to Auckland, and now the 787-9 (which seems more in proportion than the smaller 787) I'm having to reconsider... they really are a graceful looking aircraft, particularly in the flare and rotate when those wings flex upwards at an initially alarming rate! The Airbus products just don't have the asthetics with the A380 being down right ugly!
