This bug landed on my shirt today when I was on a photo shoot. I stuck it on top of a fence baton, and took this shot. I have never seen anything like it before, it was a grey-green with red markings.

Might be a new species Dave, might be called the Dave bug if no one has ever seen it before. The back legs aren't long enough to be a Locust.

Locust eh, I didn't know we had them in NZ. it was tiny, about 12mm in length. That's a standard wire strain fence baton it's sitting on.

Not that this is much help, but I've seen something very similar here in Auckland. No idea what it is though!

Can you see its serial number? It'll be on the rear fuselage, perhaps under the tailplane...

Dave, my son reckons it is a Swan Plant Seed Bug. Arocatus rusticus. Originally Australian, but now common in New Zealand. He's quite keen on bugs and looked it up in his 'Which New Zealand Insect' book. You blokes must of swapped him for Russell Crowe

Bright boy, that lad. Here I was thinking that it was the venomous Amazonian Viper bug... Link to bug pics

I caught a genuine locust when a lad aged about 10, and living on Banks Peninsula (so therefore in early 1960s) and thought it was really big, from memory about 5 inches long (never attempted to measure it, although I was myself quite small at the time, so perhaps not THAT big!) but it was like a giant grasshopper, fully airworthy and every landing was a controlled amd resounding crash! However it never seemed to suffer any structural damage, so was obviously built to take it. Colour was various shades of brown, and it hung around for a while - I even have a b&W photo of of it somewhere, but I guess most people have seen photos in books or on documentaries. Although it was the first (and only) time I have ever seen one, I had no hesitation in instantly identifying it, despite not knowing they even lived in this country. Their flight is quite noisy from memory, much clattering and whirring. Don't recall that it made any other noises though. David D

" fully airworthy and every landing was a controlled amd resounding crash! However it never seemed to suffer any structural damage, so was obviously built to take it" Sounds like the LA-9
