Warmest congratulations to Glyn Powell who has rightly been recognised for his herculean effort to present the world with a flying Mosquito. As we all know, without his work spanning many years to reproduce the wooden fuselage, this could never have happened. Glyn has received a QSM for services to aeronautical heritage preservation in the New Years honours announced today.

Oh well done! He really helped put NZ on the map for Aviation Restoration, not demeaning any of the work that Warren Denholm and Avspecs have done for the second half of the build. Without Glynn Powell's determination and perseverance and belief right at the beginning, then it would not have happened.

Well deserved. Glyn has accomplished a lot since I last saw him over 40 years ago. Must be something to do with being associated with the Papakura area.

Yep well done Glyn possibly the most important and technically difficult aviation project ever(at least away from a major corporation!) and without his passion I doubt it would have happened.

Yes truly fantastic news on Glyn Powell's well deserved QSM. This goes some way to recognising Glyn's astonishing achievement in creating from scratch, a Mosquito airframe factory in his own shed at Drury. The DH experts in the UK told Glyn this could never be done and they had good reason to believe that. There was no tooling left, no plans to build the tooling and a shoe string budget to do it all. Despite the odds and in typical Kiwi fashion, Glyn proved them all wrong with the unforgettable sight of Mosquito KA114 flying in September 2012. The people in the UK are absolutely stunned at what Glyn has achieved. I have it on good authority that one of the supporting letters for Glyn's nomination came from the DH Heritage Centre, St Albans UK. the birthplace of the Mosquito and home to the prototype W4050. When Glyn visited the museum at St Albans a couple of years ago, he was greeted as the second messiah and they truly believe that he can walk on water!

I can confirm that 2 nominations were sent in to the Honours Unit for Glyn Powell. Neither nominator knew of the other until after the first nomination was submitted. The 2nd was then added to strengthen the case for an honour to be awarded. Organisations approached were very supportive. The DH Heritage Museum letter was part of the 1st nomination, together with letters of support from Ashburton Aviation Museum, NZ Warbirds Association, Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre and Warbirds over Wanaka. Graham Orphan from Classic Wings also provided a copy of his Editorial about Glyn's indispensable part in the build of KA114 as well as copies of earlier articles written about Glyn's work. The Air Force Museum contributed a letter outlining the role of the Mosquito in RNZAF squadrons in WW2 and post-WW2. That nomination was submitted in January 2013 but just missed the deadline for the June 2013 Queen's Birthday Awards. The 2nd nomination was submitted a few months later and included letters from a couple of “heavy hitters”, adding considerable weight to the original nomination.
The wheels of bureaucracy turn very slowly and it has been a long wait.
Congratulations Glyn. You and your family should be very proud. There are 100s of people out there who are in absolute awe over what you've achieved. 1000s of us were enthralled at the sight of KA114 in the air and wish you all the best for the rebuild of your own Mossie.

A shame about the error with the mix up of awards: Bob Parker was down for a QSM, surely, and the knighthood for Sir Glyn!
