I've just got back from Ardmore and saw two fire trucks and two police cars around the wreckage of what looked to be a light plane on or near the 21 threshold of 03 / 21, ATIS said the airfield is closed and any traffic returning was taking 03 Grass.
I hope everyone is okay.

My parents saw it coming over their house, they said what got their attention was that it was spluttering and sounded to be having engine problems, my mom even commented that she hoped it would make it to the airfield because it really sounded bad, she said it looked like a small plane, like a glider prop hybrid, that is what I could recognize from the burnt wreckage (At least it looked partially burnt but was not readily recognizable as a plane.

Good, at least no one was hurt.
Can't believe how different it looked from the range and angle I saw it, I could ID it as a plane at all other than a wing, this and the fact I saw it was burnt and the odd canopy open and twisted / melted made it look like wreckage.

Fortunately, as the article above mentions, they had landed and taxied off the runway when it caught fire. Good thing the fire didn't happen in flight or the outcome could have been different. Certainly looked dramatic though - a pile of burning wreckage is never something you want to see on an airfield!

From the clues given above, looks like the Barber Snark HA/3 ZK-JEK. It's Ardmore based.

Yes that's the one. It's still sitting outside the Aerotech hangar - it's been moved clear of where it was originally (between the taxiway and runway) but looks pretty sad. Was a bit awkward today taxiing past a couple of times with trial flights and having to explain why there was burnt aircraft wreckage by the taxiway...

I remember a few years back when that wrecked Mooney sat on the side of the runway for ages... was always a "talking point" for passengers when taxiing past it!!

Glad the pilot wasn't hurt. Egads! Never seen a Snark before! Looks like the results of someone getting bits of a Bede Microjet and a Transavia Airtruk mixed up!

Flight of the Phoenix stuff, you reckon.
What are the chances of this one arising from the ashes though ?

Don't fancy it... They could use the second Airtruk boom to begin their next project.

They were designed and built by Bill Barber (Southland NZ) and incorporate some really interesting design features. A very high tech microlight. Shame there is now one less....
