Hi all, we are going away for a week next week and I hope to be able to squeeze some time to get as far as Auckland. Where would be the best spot to do a little photography of the activity around Auckland Int and are there any "better" times. Any help would be magic! I also hope to visit Ardmore at the same time, oh and MOTAT!!!

If you approach from the south turning left off the motorway at Manukau, (caution with correct lane exits on left - often early - as the airport is approached from a left branch off an arterial heading north) then there is a good car park for viewing off to the right on a molehill as you approach... Someone else could advise you about Ardmore approach - depends on whether you want to go visiting Avspec or Pioneer Aero or visit Warbirds Assn & hangar... or just take photos - different road routes perhaps.

Where would be the best spot to do a little photography of the activity around Auckland Int and are there any "better" times. Any help would be magic! I also hope to visit Ardmore at the same time, oh and MOTAT!!! Puhinui Road Observation area car parks are probable your best places over summer as aircraft approach for runway 23L. Best time for this is around 11:00 onwards as the sun is on the south side till then and you will get the shadow side. I find the best and busiest time between around 10:00 till after the Emirates A380 arrive at about 2:00pm however sometimes or many times the Emirates A380 are running late with some arriving nearer 4:00pm. Best to keep an eye on the AIAL FIDS web site for anything you maybe keen to catch. www.aucklandairport.co.nz/en/FlightInformation/ArrivalsAndDepartures.aspx?range=I&leg=A If 05R is in operation you will only get the take offs and they are quite high by the time they get over the Puhinui Road Observation Car parks. A smartphone with flightradar24 on it is good to see live tracking info for aircraft landing. The smaller aircraft Q300, Beech 1900 and the older ATR and Boeing 737 do not have ads-b so they don't show. Evening is also a good time as China Southern 787 comes in then and the Emirates A380 all leave within 45 minutes of each other. Ardmore is a bit easier as you can get reasonable close for photos. Let me know when your there and I might also be about either AKL or AMZ. Cheers, Colin
