Just a quick query re: the image from trx850. Does anyone know the story of the large #6 on the fuselage/nose of the SBD in USN markings? Its BuNo was 4559. The temp NZ serial was 208. It went on to get NZ5004. So what did the "6" represent? I'm now creating a skin of an RNZAF Dauntless (NZ211) in these colours, but I'm not sure what number to place there. Is it possible the illustrator mucked up the black serial and changed it to an "8" (I'm presuming that the drawing was done by hand with pens and paint, before the days of Photoshop and Undo) Any ideas? Regards Greg Hi Greg. The large white 6 was part of the original MAG14 markings the SBD's arrived in at Seagrove. If you re-check my SDB pages, there is another photo there with a very crudely painted 23 behind the US fuselage roundel. Several other photos taken at the same period show numbers 10 and 7 (and these were usually repeated in a smaller size on the engine cowlings). Hope this helps, Pete M.

Thanks for the quick reply Peter. Yes, I saw the 23 photo and was even more perplexed, as none of the serials (temporary or permanent) included the combination 23. So just confirming -the only change to the livery of the original 18 SBD-3s was the inclusion of the temporary NZ serial (eg NZ208) and the crudely painted large white numbers were part of the MAG markings (possibly part of the US serial). Is that right?
Fascinating!
Cheers
Greg

Greg I think the 6 was a US marking and no relation to the NZ number. But I would await the more expert replies! :-) As an aside I made a new Facbook friend yesterday. None other than Chris Fahey one of the current Planes of Fame pilots who flies (among others)former RNZAF SBD-5 NZ5062! I must send him the link to this page!
