I remember my first introduction to Floyd. It was during an ATC "Live and Work" course at Whenuapai, one of the guys had a tape player and "Final Cut"... I was hooked, and now have a pretty fair Pink Floyd LP/CD/DVD collection Saw Roger Waters "The Wall" in Paris a couple of years ago, and I am quite convinced that I'll never see anything better, no matter how long I live! Photos are taken at The Mount, the truck is based in Palmerston North. All their trucks are named after a Pink Floyd song; Run Like Hell (this one), Brain Damage, Welcome to the Machine etc

Re release of Marooned from the Division Bell.
Fascinating footage of Pripyat nearly 30 years after Chernobyl.

Lucky enough to catch the Delicate Sound of Thunder tour in 88/89; simply magic! Seen many gigs - Deep Purple in 74, Rory Gallagher in 80, SRV in 86 and the likes of Dragon, Split Enz, Th'Dudes and Cold Chisel many times but the best one was Rush in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 2010. Why? Because it was the first major gig I took my son to!!
Is PF without Rick Wright and Roger Waters really PF? Wrights keyboards were and are an integral part of what made the band stand out and I can't imagine Floyd without him!
That rig is just sick!!

Recently bought The Endless River; the 'last' Pink Floyd studio album. It's what one would expect from Gilmour and co and has lots of subtle nods to the band's musical past. It's not a classic album, like say, Dark Side or Wish You Were Here, but it debuted at Number One in the UK music charts, so it was certainly liked by a lot of people. Good music to study to. I also bought a brilliant book recently that I urge every Floyd fan to buy; The Making of Pink Floyd The Wall by Gerald Scarfe, who did the graphics for the album and subsequent film: www.geraldscarfe.com/shop/books/the-making-of-pink-floyd-the-wall-paperback-version/

Awesome thread folks! - I too got to see them at Western Springs in '88, it was EPIC! I've seen a few bands LIVE between here and OZ but nothing ever equalled that- Deep Purple at Western Springs in'85 was the loudest, but that 'Delicate sound of Thunder' tour was an 'enshrinement' of PF's comprehensive musical history & repetoire. The first half of the show was their new music, the second-half their terrific 'old' stuff...I have never heard 60,000 people who were cheering & raging etc, suddenly go completely silent, at a climax in the show! -Also, when they bought out "The Pig" near the end, it's effect on those below it was, well, intimidating almost! Reminded one of what zeppellins must have been like in WWI... -The 'Pulse' album which came out later is really quite similar in musical content, I think it was recorded live at Earls Court.
My first contact with PF was when in college and I used to listen to (the then REAL ROCK station, 2ZM, out of Wellington), after doing my Homework and trying to get to sleep. Back then they used to finish radio programs at midnight,(there was no FM, only AM,) and they all played "God Save The Queen" then shut down from midnight until 6am. 2ZM used to play this track every night just before "God Saves etc", and I just loved it! -Turned out it was "One of these Days" off the "Meddle" album...
-"Echoes" would have be my all-time favourite PF track, but I started digging into their music going right back to "Relics", and then brought their up to the then, just-released album, "Dark Side Of The Moon" -WOW! Did that really change the World musically- So many people I've since met over the years have commented that this album alone really changed their modern-concept and music dynamic for them. It has also become one of the world's top-selling albums...
At this time of year one of my other favourites songs of theirs is "Grantchester Meadows", which I believe is off the "Ummagumma" album ~ Helps me look forwards to six months time...
Thanks for letting me share Cheers

Forgive me, but some afterthoughts...
Thanks to Nuuumannn for this thread and I knew that Roger Waters had this obsession with his Dad not coming home from War (a terrible thing for young person to have to deal with), but I never knew that it was at Anzio that he had died. I really feel sorry for those troops, they were let-down by those in command and it was a hugely wasted opportunity. Perhaps out of all of Roger's solo albums, "Radio Kaos", (my personal favourite of his), is a kinda satirical demonstration of his deep abomination that is warfare... -To think it could ever happen again would indeed prove conclusively that Mankind is irrevocably insane & doomed...
I've always admired Syd Barrett's contribution and wonder what other gems he may have created had he not burned-out... -However his replacement by David Gilmour wasn't so much a 'replacement' as they still continued to revere his works as they kept playing them - it was almost as if 'it could have been any one of them' that suffered so. There are many that allude to Roger Waters has having 'gone a bit off too', later on, but there were distinct differences in their respective make-up. Syd was always a bit 'out there', but a little shy too, he didn't really like crowds, and this started to become apparent as the band started to become more popular. Roger was always the front-man and he poured years of his creative talent into their music. Indeed, he believed HE was their leader... Also,PF had always had their own cliche of followers from the beginning, that followed them around to their gigs. David Gilmour's introduction added a whole new zest to their music, albeit gently, over time...
There are many great guitarists around now, here fifteen years into the new millenium... Looking back at PF, I personally feel that Gilmour's style is in a league virtually of it's own, as he is indeed the 'Master of Sustain' musically, evoking emotional responses in people like no other...
And Rick Wright is equally so with his keyboard style. His passing away perhaps does herald an end to a great era in Music, as nobody played quite like him, and I also have many favourites in the Keyboards sector...
The main thing about PF's music, from the first album through to 'The Endless River' is that with each time you play them, something small but new reveals itself, and through continued listening, periodically, of All their music (to me at least), one feels a constant 'refreshment' with these ever-familiar songs... -So many Bands have their music thrashed on radio and so on, and I've worn out several vinyl albums and tapes over the years. There is something forever always enduring about Pink Floyd ~
There can't be many a pilot or passenger out there that doesn't have a favourite Pink Floyd track that says it all when you're up aloft...
Cheers

No, thanks to NZ5218 for this excellent thread!
Looking forward to The Wall release! Dave Gilmour has a new album on the way out in September called Rattle That Lock. In equally excellent news, NWOBHM rockers Iron Maiden are also releasing an album in September called Book of Souls! Hope they tour the world again soon.

Gilmour has called it quits for PF, and rightly so; with only Mason and him involved as PF, it was really all over when Wright died, eh! Their legacy, however, is unsurpassed, and quite possibly unsurpassable.....
