Based on their own artwork, my report of Xtradecal's release of their 1/72nd Corsair sheet which includes RNZAF aircraft and this subsequent 1/48 RNZAF release led me to assume they had opted for a mid-Blue about the same as Ventura decals RNZAF Corsairs. Out of interest I went ahead and ordered the 1/48 sheet regardless. My X48-136 F4U-1 Corsairs RNZAF arrived and to my surprise the roundel colour is quite dark - 09-DSCN1019 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr The colour is approximately equal to Ventura Decals V4882 RNZAF PV-1 Venturas, re-released with darker roundel Blue, and similar to the old AeroMaster SP48-10 'RNZAF in WW2'. Very good news in my opinion. I wanted to correct my report as soon as possible as this darker roundel colour probably makes the decals much more useful to many modelers ...? The news may not all be good though, depending on your accuracy co-efficient. So, in my humble opinion - 1) Only the (wartime) fuselage roundels appear to have offset bars. As I understand it the port-upper and starboard lower US applied insignia which RNZAF over-painted would also have offset bars. 2) The Blue-White-Blue ratio on the wartime wing roundels does not look correct to me. I realize there were local variations but these insignia are noticeably different from either of Ventura's or Aeromaster's b-w-b ratios. Xtradecal have an interesting way of dealing with the RNZAF applied roundel-bars starboard upper and port lower. They provide lighter coloured bar border decals to overlay over the US Insignia Blue ones. Personally I am a little disappointed the 1/48 sheet does not include fuselage roundel-bars with 360degree yellow rings, which are included in the 1/72 sheet. 10-DSCN1020 by Wally Hicks, on Flickr The darker roundel Blue colour is a big plus in my opinion and I may contact Xtradecal about maybe doing the set in 1/32 scale? Cheers Wally.

Hi Wally Xtradecal have already done a 1/32 version, -bit disappointed as they only cover Post WWII FG-1D's serving as part of J Force (which in itself is not totally bad but.....) www.hannants.co.uk/product/X32055Perhaps Xtradecal might do some of the WWII RNZAF F4U's Regards Alan
