Had white crosses on it most of the time didn't it? Why on earth is it being closed?

I've got relatives with a batch at Matarangi, I mentioned this to my uncle at Christmas, it's mainly due to complete lack of use, and it's also an expensive bit of land which the developers want to turn in sections and sell.

Closure has now been notam'd, so its official. it's mainly due to complete lack of use, With a $20 landing fee in place and prior authorization needed, you'd think twice before actually popping in there.

Just a heads up, and not an airfield closure but another creeping loss of aviation Infrastructure, Statford Airfield will be losing its Fuel facilities at the end of February. Another useful stopover point gone Z aviation (A company we all have shares in via superfund) are upgrading the card readers on the pumps to a horrendously expensive type (not an off the shelf unit) and aging installations that don't have high throughput will be simply decommissioned. The Stratford Aero club are OK in that they fly Zenairs with Rotax engines which use Mogas, but its going to be tough for itinerant machines that use Avgas - They'll have to go to New Plymouth with its controlled airspace and associated charges. It appears general aviation has declined to the tipping point....

Didn't that also happen in Taumarunui a year or two ago?
I'm sure we all know who's to blame, and it ain't the Oil Companies!

Another strip that's closed is at Darfield, about 40km west of Christchurch, it was set up for use by ZK-AMY, but not needed now as AMY is parked up. Think it will become a subdivision. isc ps no fuel or services at the strip.

Just would be handy for those with weekenders at Matarangi. Even with a $20 fee it is a short hop rather than the long drive through the ranges from Auckland...

The strip was only used for about 4 or 5 years. It was about 1500 metres long, situated about 3km east of Darfield, beside the main road, on the other side of the railway track. Good while it lasted. isc
