I was just pondering as it's now been five years since the last RNZAF Base Open Day show, three years since the 75th, and no hint of anything in the works, are military themed airshows (with visiting military aircraft as well) at Ohakea or Whenuapai still a likely occurence in the future? I'm well aware that operational considerations take priority, but the open days in the 2000's seemed to be great successes and it's a shame they weren't able to continue.

I guess it's possible we may see a return once they have a Texan II display team up and running, and an NH90 and/or A109 display team/routine in place.
The open days are extremely good for public relations, and must do wonders for their recruiting numbers too when young people have the opportunity to look over a base, look at the various trade displays and talk with RNZAF personnel one to one. They'd be pretty silly not to continue with such events.

The only real way to 'get the traffic sorted' is to repeat the event each and every year. That way the people involved can learn what works and what doesn't.
Just to get it wrong once and then throw up your hands in horror actually gets you nowhere.

That was exactly my feeling at Ohakea in 2012 - that lessons learned had been unlearned and the wheel was being reinvented, and not very well at that. |

Ohakea's problem was they hired some civilian "professionals" to do the job, who then failed to turn up to do it. They would have been better getting the Army in to direct traffic.
Mind you, it was absolutely fine when we got there nice and early.

Yeah but that's just my point. The corporate knowledge of how to do things properly (from my perspective at least) which was evident at the previous RNZAF open days and shows up until 2009 appeared to have vanished in 2012, including some aspects besides traffic management. Besides outside the base, traffic management and parking on base was a shambles to the point of being dangerous; I didn't and don't understand why that had to be when the knowledge of how to do it "right" is out there and demonstrated every airshow season. What concerns me is that the Ohakea 2012 experience may engender a "never again" mentality in the powers that be. Hopefully not. |

Omaka 3,300 ft (maybe, technically, if unloaded. However, NO!)

Hi Folks
Just new to this forum and came across this item and it made me think, with Wanaka on next year will Ohakea have an airshow the week before Wanaka as per last time. Would be keen to know if possible, as we are thinking of going down south but also don't want to miss Ohakea either if it is going to be on again. Any help would be appreciated.

They cannot take P-3 Orions, or Boeing 757s there either (in terms of actually landing), but they do display them in the air. I never walk through them anyway, because the queues are always too long and I cannot be bothered joining the line. |

2017 was the rumour I'd heard. Nice to see it made official! I certainly didn't expect a proper three-day airshow!

That would make it the weekend after Wings Over Wairarapa.
You could drive from Masterton on Sunday 19th after the show, and join the queue to get into Ohakea in time for the first display.

So is "Wings Over Wairarapa" moving from Wellington Anniversary weekend (traditionally late January) to a date 3 weeks later in February?? When did this happen? Is this the approximate date for next year 2016?
